Hi,

I got a problem. When I download something it is really fast the the beginning then it levels out. Is there something that might be cuasing this. I download the first meg or meg and a half in just 3 seconds or so then it slows down. Help? My cable is back to speed but I think it is my computer. Looking for some help!

That is normal, you will always get a burst of speed at the very begining of downloads.

Hi,

Is there a way to control this?

The "burst" is usually the result of your brower's initial calculation process. This is especially true of IE.

There's no way around that because while your downloading the file the browser is actually estimating the rate. Once it's done it gives you the final rate which is nothing more than the size of the file divided by the time in seconds.

Hi....
I know what you are talking about with this "burst" of speed when you first start to download but recently I was watching techTV and Leo Laporte was talking about this EXACT thing and he said the reason for this is becasue when you click on a link to download something, it immediately starts to download it even before you finish selecting the location to download it too and all of that...so, in turn, once you see the box displaying the results of your download, it looks as if in the beginning like your super fast and then it will slow down. This is because it is catching up to itself, if that makes any sense at all. Its very hard to explain it in writing but i'm sure you would understand it better coming from Leo..lol
Go to the techtv website and you will find tons and tons of info about speeding up your cable modems too. I like the info on speedguide a lot but i think all this playing around with the regestry can do more damage then good.

Another things Leo had said on one of his shows was that screwing with all these different regestry settings for your cable modem will not really improve your speed and there is only one setting that your should worry about and that is the MTU settings. All others, he says, will really do nothing.

I believe him because he is an expert and besides, I can not complain about my cable modem after taking his advice, my average download is 400 and my thouroughput is always between 1500-2200.

Well...I hope i have helped someone...
Have a good day and happy surfing!!

Try putting IGMPLevel= 2 string value and DefaultTOS=8 Dword Value in your reg. Under H_K_L_M/system/currentcontrol/services/VxD/MSTCP in your reg. These two tweaks leveled out my downloads. So they do not go up and down. Plus lower my pings. They work in winMe ,98,98se and 2000. Remember to back your reg up first. Now they have work on great on the machine I have tried them on for people who were have these. Problems .But not to say it will work with all peoples machines. Give them a try and see if not just remove them. Good luck! They work really great for 2000.! :)

Yes and they work for the most part. Actually for some of the good parts to..
It's a based on your connection type of thing.
Well at least what SpeedDemon said is true. When you click on the Download it immeadiatly starts saving it in your Temp folder then you pick the spot where it goes and it catch's up in the Download window.
There are a lot more factors that are involved than what was said.
Plus I just can't buy into everything that is said by the for-mentioned LEO of the supposed TCP god himself..
After all why would Microsoft give us the wonderful add on's for our TCP/IP stack. Plus not all the connections are the same.. Personaly I'm Glad that his way of thinkinking worked for you...
