Hello.

I'm sorry if I'm doing this incorrectly or if I use incorrect terminology, but I've tried everything that I know how to do, and I can't get my computer to recognize my router. I'm sorry if I don't give you enough information, or if this is a simple problem that any one of you could fix within a second, but I just want help with this one thing and then I'll leave you alone.

I am running WinXP home on my computer. I have a cable modem and a Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL router. Recently, I had my hard drive wiped clean. Everything was going fine, until I noticed that my internet speed had become much slower than before. I went to system information, and it says under Components/Modem that my modem is the onboard Conexant D850 56k v.9x DFVc Modem. I can't change it because even though my cable modem and router are in use to get into the internet, the computer won't recognize it. My download speeds have become much slower, and pages, though downloading fast, don't show up as quickly as they could.

I know I'm doing something wrong or I've overlooked something, but I'm at a loss as to how I should fix this, or if it can even be fixed. Again, I'm sorry, but could I please have your help?

Thank you.

Your cable modem wont' show up in device manger under modem

If anything it would be in the usb section unless you connect modem though a usb cable.

Take a tcpip analyzer below me cuat and paste everythign below ipinformation in a new reply also who is your provider and davertised speed??

TCP options string = 020405b401010402
MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.
MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 64240
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240

RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
bandwidth * delay product (Note this is not a speed test):

Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2569.6 kbps (321.2 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1027.84 kbps (128.48 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 117 hops

TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000

my advertiser is a subsidiary of Comcast, and is available only to people living in my town.

I don't know what my advertised speeds may be, but before my computer was wiped clean I was getting speeds of 1400+ on most websites

You are using an RJ-45, CAT-5 wire and a NIC in the computer to get to the router to your modem and then to the Internet? Not a phone line? Right?

Conexant D850 56k v.9x DFVc Modem = is a phone modem, not a cable modem.

Definitely not a phone line. I do not connect through my phone line.

But, apparently, my computer thinks that I do. And I think that's what's making my connection speed slower.

Take the 56K card out.

Ok.

Are you sure that won't mess up my computer?

No. It won't mess up anything. When you are done, you can always put it back in (if you want to).
