Guys, I just hooked up my Linksys Etherfast 4-Port router to split my cable connection between my PC and my iMac. Everything was going fine for a little while.. But when I sat down to play a good ol' game of Counterstrike (online 1st-person shooter for those of you who dont know), I would be getting terrible speeds (600-800 ping). My normal is around 100ms. Anyhow I know it isnt a bandwidth problem because I could withold 200-300k download transfers simultaneously with both machines. Another problem is that ever since the router was set up no one is able to log onto my hotline server(similar in a way to FTP). I had them try both my WAN IP (24.168.3.155) and what ipconfig says to be my IP address (192.168.1.1) and no one is able to connect to either of those those(they got the port address right). Thanks to anyone who is able to help in anyway!!!

I have no idea why you are getting a a high ping while playing HL,mine has no problem. But about your server thing, you have to forward the port that the program uses by going to the router properties, advanced, then port forwarding and tell it what port to forward (i dont have the program so I dont know what port).

ohhh yeah, people connecting over the modem will use the external Ip address

what do you mean by external IP address?

tharef hotline uses port 5500, so when you go into your router (ie 192.168.1.1) then click advanced, then enter the port (ie 5500) in the box next to 192.168.1.x then enter the lan ip address of the computer you want to foward that port to (ie the computer your using is 192.168.1.100) you can view what your current lan address is by (if you have windows 98 go to start > run > type winipcfg, or if you have windows 2000 go to start> run> cmd> type ipconfig /all)

When you have users connect have them connect to the ip address of your cable modem (ie mine is 24.13.142.141) then once a request is put on your ip address for port 5500 it will go to the computer that has the port fowarded.

Now is your 600-800ms ping in every game of counterstrike you play or just once probably just a crappy server.

Hmmmm... interesting, forget about CS, its not that important. But just supplying the router with 5500 isnt enough. Hotline server also uses ports 5498-5501 to transfer files to users. Is there a way to input a range of IPs into that area? It doesnt seem like there will be enough room for everything I need... thanks, oh and another thing, I use all CAT-6 wiring, is having my wires near a few power cords / power supplies really going to effect anything? thanks.

With the linksys 1.33 firmware
ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/befsr41/befsr_v1331.exe

and above (1.33 is the best and most stable I think) it had port ranging.

I dont understand, why is it that for some things (eg. hotline server, ftp server) you have to enter a port in fowarding for it to work, but for other things like Starcraft, counterstrike, and http, which use their own ports, these things dont require port forwarding. Also, does enabling "Block WAN Request" potentially cause any problems with anything that its not supposed to?

I think that clients dont need ports forwarded in most cases, but its when you are a server that you need the ports forwarded, the router has to know where to send all of the information
