I just got a new computer with a DVD+RW drive. I got a bunch of DVD's i wanna back up and was wondering if there is a way to just copy them to my hard drive and make the movie a smaller file, rather than having the movies taking up as much space as they do.

make single disc xvcd's out of them. almost no loss of quality and they'll fit on a single cdr.

When I tried that there was a fairly significant loss of quality  - how'd you do it - was it a compressed file already when you put on xvcd, or was it a downloaded movie file?

I agree - maybe it's my entertainment center (not cheap), but I ALWAYS get lossy results with VCD. I have 3 DVD burners now and so don't even bother.

It's not your television, you should easily be able to tell the difference between a DVD and a(n) (S)VCD.
Even on my TV (not a new plasma one, but a fairly decent one) I can see the difference - but it maybe because I've got caught up in this discussion, and am subsequently nit-picking for any deterioration
