View Full Version : Do PAL encoded DVDs run on most computer dvd drives?
I realize that PAL is encoded at a higher resolution than NTSC, but was wondering if the dvd drive that I have in my computer will play a PAL encoded disc?
Your PC DVD-ROM (and software/hardware decoder) should have no problem playing a PAL disc.
However, a PAL disc will likely be encoded in a region other than 1 or 0, meaning you'll probably need to use some software to fool your player or remove the region coding first.

Let me ask you this then...how hard would it be to down-convert a pal disc to ntsc? I'm sure it's possible, just don't know how troublesome the process would be...

Not too hard, with some basic DVD decrypting and compression knowledge. I could walk you through it sometime if you needed assistance.
You'll likely get some sort of ghosting though, with the 25fps being converted to 30. It can be a minor annoyance at first, but unless the film completely sucks, you'll probably forget about it in a few minutes.
just another quick question, i had a video that was xvid encoded at 23 FPS and i tried everything i could to convert it to 29FPS but nothing worked, it was just skipping like mad, when i could convert it somewhat better the sound was way out of sync.
any easy way to do this ?
