I have a system running with 2 pc, 1 w98se and the other ME, setup with client for MS network, NOT using ICS, 1 NIC in each PC and connected as follows: PCs to Linksys hub, uplink port to DSL, the connection software is "access manager" for Sympatico and uses PPoE; and the network protocols are TCP/IP and IPX/SPX.
I was told that I would need a router; Server/client setup; or use Internet Connection Sharing and since I am not using any of these I am curious as to what I am doing (right/wrong or better/worse), I can hook my laptop to the hub and use all 3 pcs online at the same time; So how come this is working, am I choking my DSL performance?
One other footnote I set the same type of setup at work with 6 pcs and all works well there??
I consider myself to be a novice in this area so I know I didnt create something new and unknown :) Please enlighten me.

Some DSL modems, such as the Cisco 67x series have built in NAT Routers.

It will work . But you will loose speed. If you are shareing files.Try adding NetBEUI Protocol. It will help you out with lan part. Then unbind the TCP/IP Protocol From Client for Microsoft NetWork and File and PrinterShareing for MicrosoftNetwork. See If this helps out. Could Be you TCP/IP Protocol Is being slow downed when one is transfering files. NetBEUI is better for file shareing. Plus are you use extra Ips. You never mention that. If not the other computers are trying to steal the main one if they are all on at once. This will cause problems to. I have seen people try this. RR is bad for that. If you network another computer threw there service and only want to use it for lan make sure you never add the TCP/IP protocol. It wil steal the ip in a seconed and really slow you down. Hope this helps. ;) If you are useing a hub you do not need software just extra IPs . Usally buy the time you setup a thired computer this is when you will loose speed. Linsky 5 port hubs work the best with just to computers. They have more better hubs out there for this purpose or you could switch to a linsky switch wich you devide the bandworth up evenly. For better performance. They cost just a little more. But are worth it.

Also try the network forum. If you need more info. ;)

Just a shot in the dark, since I'm no expert either, but you said you're using DSL.

In my area, DSL users automatically get something like 4 extra IP's for their account.

It's possible you're using the extra IP's that come with your account.... maybe.

Call the provider and ask them if you do have extra IP's.
Beyond that, I don't know.

The only way that set-up would work is if you had an IP provided by your ISP for each machine hooked up to the hub. What a router could do in your case is let all of your computers share 1 external IP. Like the poster above said, call your ISP and find out.
