My first message to the experts on Speedguide...

I have windows xp home edition that came installed on my computer. I seem to have lost?, corrupted? files: mstask.exe, BWfiles.dll and Symevent.386 or Symevent.sys. What this means is that all my scheduled tasks/updating are not working. My computer is virus free according to daily scanning using Intelligent Updater with Norton and frequent Activescans by Panda. I use Zone Alarm Pro, Ad Subtract and Pest Patrol which seem to be configured properly.

This may be affecting my Yahoo e-mail with which I am not able to reply or compose e-mails as my computer freezes and must be shut off to reboot it.

Thanks for any help!

Couple of things you could try. Start, run, sfc /scannow and have your XP cd handy, it will ask for it. This is the system file checker. This will scan your system for corrupt or missing (XP) system files and replace them with files from the CD. Another option is to do a repair of XP.

Repair XP Installation without Clean Install:

Configure your computer BIOS to start from the CD-ROM drive at bootup.

Insert your Windows XP compact disc (CD) into your CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer.

When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

When you see the following message displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

At this point an option to press R to enter the Recovery Console is displayed. Do not select this option.

On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press the R key to repair Windows XP.

Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

This will repair XP and put everything back to as it first was. You will have to reinstall any Hotfixes and OS updates including SP1 and DX9, plus retweak most (but not all) things all over again.

The advanage here is that you will not have to spend hours reinstallindg all your programs again, as well as setting them up...................

BWfiles.dll is part of Logitech Desktop Manager application. Uninstall and then reinstall your Logitech software.

Symevent.386 or Symevent.sys are part of Norton packages. Use add-remove programs for Nort0on AV and you will get an option to repair it.

Use System File Checker to repair mstask.exe. Or...delete all scheduled tasks and recreate them anew within each app that has a scheduled task.
