AOL not connecting to network?

I am using AOL with a dial up connection. I keep getting an error saying "Can't establish a connection to network" when attempting to sign on. It was working perfectly fine until this afternoon. I ran my Norton Utilities 2004, and this did not remedy the problem. I also tried installing "Earthlink" as an alternative, and that also gives me the same type of error!!!!

Any ideas what the heck is going on here? Help appreciated.

Dial up....do you hear the modem making noises?
Can you click on start==>run==>dialer which brings up the phone dialer, place a voice call to your cell phone or something...just to see if the modem can pick up a dial tone and dial away?
Run a modem test in your modems properties on control panel?

Trying to see if the modem is functional, then on to troubleshooting your TCP stack and winsock.
