Got a problem. Have an XP machine that was joined to a domain. I customized the desktop, screensaver, shortcuts etc.

Now I need to create a local user on the machine and I want to copy all the customized stuff to the local user.

How can I do this? at what point to I need to disjoin this PC from the domain.

Can the copy of profiles occur through windows explorer or do I have to right-click on My Computer and manipulate the profiles that way?

Yes, reboot into safe mode, log in as the local Administrator.

Assuming you have logged in already as the new domain user, to create the new profile directories. (more guaranteed success rate when booting into safe mode, I've had it hiccup a couple of times trying it booted into normal mode)

Again, be logged in as local admin, NOT the user account. Can't cleanly copy a live profile when in use.

Copy the local users profile to the domain user profile...you can figure out by eyeballing the directories, what the name of the domain user profile path is, when you select "copy", and have to browse to the path in C:\Documents and Settings....

Right Clicking My Computer, dealing with it that way, is how I do it...but it really just brings up a little explorer window.
