ok, i went out and bought a new network adapter for my computer tonight because the old one would not keep the cable in very well so that it kept slipping out.
i took out the old one, put in the new one, installed the drivers for the new one and now am not able to get on the internet with it.
does anyone know what the problem is? i am stuck. please help.
thanks in advance.
Assuming you have cable internet service, try killing power to your modem for about a minute. May need to reboot too.

have reset the modem already, didn't wait 1 minute, but close to 20 seconds. should i do it again for a minute? i have rebooted several times now.
Go a minute.
Is the new nic listed in device manager?
Go to start>run and type cmd then in the 'command window type ipconfig /all
Copy/paste the text here.

ok, went a minute and 10 seconds to play it safe ;)
didn't come back on yet.
(just to let ya know, this comp that has the problem has windows ME.)
i type 'ipconfig /all' into the 'cmd' window and there is too much info for the one screen so that i only see part of it and i can't scroll up to see the rest of it!
any other way to get the info?

try ipconfig /all /p?
just now tried it, the /p part brings up what each command does and nothing else.
the ipconfig/all command works just fine, i just can't see everything that comes up.
Try ipconfig /all>c:\windows\desktop\ip.txt
Then find the file ip.txt on your desktop and open it.

Call your provider and tell them you changed your network card and can't get get online. I believe they need to do something on thier end so you can pull an IP with the new nic. Thier system has already given an IP to the mac address of your old nic and you may only be allowed one IP.

ok, i gave my isp a call and they said that since one of my computers has internet that there is nothing wrong on their end and something just has to be done on my end. unfortunately they didn't have a clue as to what needs to be done on my end.
so here i am again begging for your mercy once again. i'm presuming there is some problem in windows (cause it's ME), but i just don't know what it is.
if anyone has any idea what's wrong, please let me know. if you need some info from the comp or about the comp, just ask and i'll get it to you.
thanks.

update:
i reopened up the computer, took out the card, move some of the other things around inside it, put it in a different slot, reinstalled the driver, removed the double listing in the network control panel, hooked my cable modem up to just that comptuer, reset it, rehooked it up to my switch so that both computers are on, reset it again and somehow it now works. restarted the other computer as a test and it still works.
i can honestly say that i don't really know what i did that make it work. but it works none the less. anyone got a guess as to why it now works? :D
man computers can be strange sometimes
oh well, things are running well again
thanks for the help guys. :thumb:

When you removed your old NIC, did you uninstall the NIC in Device Manager first, before powering down and physically removing it?
Sometimes it helps to fully remove a devices drivers before actuallly removing the device itself.
Moving your new NIC probably setting in the drivers better, and let networking services rebind to it again, whereas the first time, they may have still been half stuck on the old NIC.
