all of a sudden I couldn't get out to the internet, and after talking to an absolute moron of a tech, I called back and got somebody really good. She had me uninstall/reinstall the mindspring max software, and it still didn't work. She said that was no surprise, because it sucked, and had me install ras PPPoE, warning me that it was unsupported.

RasPPPoE is working fine - solved all of my problems - but there are a two details that I can't work out.

1) the old software connected automatically when I booted up a program such as IE that sought a connection. Now IE tries to connect through the dial up networking window, and when I change IE's default to LAN, I get the dail up networking window with "connect to" set to LAN. Can I set raspppoe as the default?

2) the raspppoe connection window 'forgets' who I am trying to connect to - "phone number" is set to 0 and I have to type in mindspring.com to connect. Can I set this and forget about it?

I just called mindspring tech support for an unrelated matter, and decided to ask them about raspppoe. The person that I talked to said that they didn't recommend using it, and that they have new mindspring software (just released in the last few weeks) available. Turns out that it is winpoet.

Is winpoet any good?

Also, in writing this I discovered a new problem - if I open a new browser window, that new window doesn't seem to have a connection - maybe because it is trying to connect through the wrong software? Or maybe my browser was just trippin' out for a second there...

So, can anybody help me fix up raspppoe, or should I just download and switch to winpoet?

No winpoet will give other headaches

When you log on to, with, RASPPPoE it has the user name and password have it remember your password for loggin next drag the connection into the startup menu so that when you restart it starts up...
At least thats how its supposed to work.
You could also lookup robert_s here on speedguide to get more info on the startup...

Now the Mindspring Max is a pain in the ???
but they still have the Enternet 100 available to at this page... http://download.mindspring.com/maxdsl/pppoe_win.html
You need your user name and password to get it.
It beets the heck out of winpoet and it won't give you the small problems you will run into with RASPPPoE (small reloggin thing) Unless thats been worked out..
Don't get me wrong there are work arounds for it but you won't have to mess as much with the Ethernet software...
Except to setup the always on part and I can help you with that..
Either way you'll be sorry with the Winpoet it will slow you down not a question in my mind about that...
I have had it on my system for about an hour and made it history..
I don't know what the girl was thinking about putting you in the winpoet unless you have a driver that she feals is corrupt in your system that may be keeping the other from working properly...
I think I know who your talking about to She's very helpful...
If you try to get the Enternet by itself and can't get it let me know..
Good luck
Dan

thanks dan.

I think that enternet 100 is what I WAS running - enternet something, maybe not 100.

So let me get this straight - If I drag raspppoe profile into the startup menu it will startup whne I boot...? what about getting that profile to retain mindspring as the "phone number" to dial?

This part below is right off the RASPPPoE web site on the main page about half way down
The connection has to be called "mindspring.com"
Also if your running Win98SE and you experiance a freeze up condition you have two things to do
One assign a IP address to the network card
heres the numbers..
10.0.0.2 subnet mask of 255.0.0.0
next get this driver from microsoft.. http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q243/1/99.ASP
Have fun with it

Note 2: Mindspring's PPP-over-Ethernet servers are not fully compliant with RFC 2516 and will send an invalid reply if you try to connect to the unnamed default service. To work around this problem, enter mindspring.com (case-sensitive!) in the phone number field of your dial-up connection. Furthermore, Mindspring's servers reportedly have a problem detecting
when a connection is ended without proper termination. This is an issue when configuring an "always on" connection in Windows 2000 and shutting the machine down or rebooting - after three reboots, you may find yourself unable to log on to their service for up to an hour. To work around this problem, always disconnect your "always on" connection manually before rebooting or shutting down Windows 2000.

Again good luck
Dan

In case you need help, e-mail the gentlemen who created RASPPPoE. You can get his address from his web-site above. He even post here occasionally under the name "robert_s", so you could also search for a post of his and email him through the post.
