Pause in Downloading

Whenever I download a file, it will download 100k or so, pause for a second, then download another 100k until the file is done. I'm thinking without the pauses, it would download 2x faster. Is this normal?

Well it really depends on servers,sometimes some ftp's are really intermittent,http,are better than ftp's at pausing
