@home just told me I have to install a program to change my network settings to support Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol.
Can anyone tell me if DHCP is a good thing to switch to or should I leave my settings alone? Thanks for any info.

If you try to use a fixed IP address on a network configured for DHCP, sooner or later you will lose connectivity when the IP addresses are reassigned, but probably not before youcause some other user to lose connectivity. Best to change over to DHCP.

They are forcing to me give up my static id. The letter states I have until Feb. 1 to make the change. I got the letter today.

Really doesn't matter if you have if setup Static or DHCP. @Home gives a static with the right to change it anytime. They would like you to have it DHCP. So I wouldn't worry about it very much. But don't install any of their software, **** its about as bad as AOL.

Your right don't listen to me I was only a Tier2 supervisior for @Home. Look just set it up DHCP and don't worry about it. But static will work until @Home changes your IP.

I got my cable last August and I had to set it up for DHCP to begin with. I've never had a static IP. I don't see why it is such a big deal. From August till now, my IP has only changed ONCE.

I have no idea who it applys to. I haven't work there in 6 months. @home always wants people to setup their computers DCHP. It saves you the trouble of calling in if they happen to switch your IP address. Plus if you put the wrong IP in you can actually steal someone elses IP and it will cut them right off. My IP hasn't change ever since I've had it. Over 2 years now.

Dement,
Sorry no offense intended. If you still worked there you would know what's up.I would tell but of course then I would have to kill you.If he or she gets a letter, they need to change to dynamic because their IP WILL change. This does not apply to all.

change it, to avoid IP conflicts in the future.....

you don't have to install any of their crappy software, in fact don't

you can set it to automatically find an IP in windows without having to use their software...

I'm really not sure if this is supposed to be top secret or anything.I'll take a chance that its not that big a deal.We have a surplus of under utilized IP blocks.IP Reclamation compacts the customer base into a smaller block of IP's, freeing up IP addresses.Just a little housecleaning guys.

I've had @home for over a year. Always set up for DHCP but never had the assigned IP change. I get the IP reserverd for a week each time. Probably if your subnet is under-utilized you've have the same IP forever.
We gotta build forums for @home, RR and verison to figure out what they're doing in each region.

Mine was setup static from the getgo its in the info that came with the service and how the tech had me do it when i configed network settings. why not just call @home verify they sent the letter they would know better then we would if they sent it.
