PC that I built myself. Not Overclocked yet:
All official drivers used.
P4E Prescott 1mb L2
1 gig OCZ pc-3200
Sapphire 9800Pro
Epox 4pca3+ Mobo
Ran a burn in test. Prime95 all night. A few tests of 3dmark 2003. Ran Sandra burn-in wizard for a few peripherals. Can I safely Assume that my system is stable? I ask because I tried playing Thief 2 and it crashed to the desktop. Probably the game because I could go into task manager and end the game task.
I just want to make sure in case I need to return a component that is not operating. I would think that If I can run 3dmark 2003 and Prime95 that the Hardware is fine.
Any thoughts suggestions? Would running 3dmark03 and Folding@home at the same time overnight be a better torture test of the video and CPU?
Thanks in advance for any insight.
Regards,
JJ Mclure

We can't tell if your system is stable or not..... give it a few days.... maybe play a few higher end games, see how it does.

*sorry for double post*
I found a program called CPU-Burn in guaranteed to generate more heat than any other program designed... its also free. If you leave thsi run for 5-6 hours I bet your system is good to go.

ok, what about the video card? is 3d mark 2003 good to torture it?

Yep.... might as well just play a few games to test the video card... have fun AND torture it at the same time
Unless you're overclocking, there's no need to burn-in components. Just use your PC for whatever you normally would...that's the real "test."
You could run this for a while to test your card out

Burke is right though for the most part. Burn-ins are usefull in troubleshooting a systems stability IMO. Could be an issue woth the game itself more than anything else. See if there are any patches for it.

Agreed ...
Try other games ...
You might want to run Memtest86 from a Floppy over night to test the memory without software interference
IF he's Prime stable than his Ram is fine.
I like Memtest better myself too though.;)

ok, thank you my friends.
I like that video test from daionet. pretty cool.
Great help. I think you are right. I think it's the game.

Yeah it's a great program. I've seen OC'd cards that were assumed stable by most test but failed this one. ;)
Hope all is well and you enjoy your new system. :thumb:

I'm a new at this and I didn't know what or why you should a burn-in but you answered it for me. Thanks and I'll keep reading all your posts!!! You guys are pretty sharp.

Just Burke.
J.J. McClure is the character played by Burt Reynolds in the "Cannonball Run" movies, and Captain Chaos is the alternate character played my Dom DeLuise.

You CAN burn-in if you're really worried about whether or not you have bum components, but yeah, unless you're overclocking and need to test the stability of the increased speed, burn-in isn't necessary (and frankly is rather time-consuming for someone who's eager to use their PC).
As for anything, the best way to test your PC is to use it like you normally would -- surf, e-mail, word processing, play games, etc., etc. -- and if any anomalies show up, then start troubleshooting.
The SG forums are loaded with highly experienced people -- many of whom are far more advanced than I -- so you're in the right place for help and to get any of those nagging questions answered.

Sometimes benchmarks don't always "push the buttons" of a system like a variety of games do. I don't know what game engine Thief2 uses....are there patches for the game? Prime and Folding, they push certain area's of the CPU. For a game, I'd look more at the graphics card drivers, not the CPU. Or possibly other background programs. 3DMark pushes DirectX...and only certain parts of it, but back to what engine does Thief2 use?
Has this machine been recently formatted with a fresh install of the OS, latest drivers, windows updates, etc? Or has this machine been around a while, perhaps had a different brand video card in it that has left a few driver files behind?
