View Full Version : SATA connections to Asus P4C800-E Deluxe

This is my first computer build since 486's were walking the earth (I have purchased factory-built computers since then). This is a question for those of you that are familiar with this Asus mobo. I will need to connect two Raptors--figure I would use the two Soiuth Bridge SATA connections to configure the two Raptors as a RAID 0.

Next, I want to connect an SATA backup hard drive--assume that I can connect it to one of the Promise SATA connectors on the motherboard--right?

Then I need to connect two optical drives--a Plextor DVD burner and a DVD-ROM drive. The Plextor is available with an SATA connection. Can I connect the Plextor DVD burner to the other Promise SATA connector on the motherboard or would it be better to puchase the Plextor with an IDE connector and connect both optical drives on the same IDE channel OR connect one of the optical drives on the primary IDE and the other optical drive on the secondary IDE?

Perhaps this should have been posted on the storage section and I did not want to cross post, but it really is about how to connect the drives to the motherboard.

Suggestions??

Yes, you can use the ICH5R SATA in the south bridge to run your RAID, use one of the Promise SATA connectors for the other drive...I've never used a SATA burner...frankly, I'd stick with IDE for now. Put your two burners on one cable on the Secondary IDE channel. Make sure you have both SATA and IDE enabled in the BIOS...not sure what it's called, but it's something like "Enhanced."

Yeah I'm with Burke here too.
Use the Raptors on the Intel by all means, select enhanced and make SATA bootable. Disable the Promise one all together too.;)
Before you Raid the HD's go into them in the Bios and *Enable LBA, Block mode and 32-Bit,leave PIO and DMA on auto and disable Smart.
There are a few other Bios settings that help too. When you get to that let us know if you need a hand.:D

Why would you DISABLE Logical Block Addressing??

I never messed with any setting except enabling both SATA and IDE and RAIDed Raptors on my P4C800-E and never had a problem.

:o Dar, because I misread an article on WD's site. :rtfm: :(
Your question prompted me to find it again and I did. Well it says to disable it IF your Bios doesn't show the right capacity. But to enable it if the option is there.
I was very wrong. I also get to reformat now and am deserving of the ridicule you see fit I suppose.;)
Above post is edited now.

The VITAL thing to make sure is enabled is PCI Bus Master.

Boo, booo, hiss hiss :rtfm: :rtfm: :rtfm:

LOL, takes a good man to admit an error, have fun with the format, its time anyway :)

Thanks man. I even sent a brief formal apology to Burke. ;)
I can't believe I misread that and have been setting it wrong all this time. Oh well, learning is a constant process.
My last reformat was less than a month ago, but on the bright side I have everything backed up. :2cool:

Why would you have to reformat? Can't you just enable LBA?

Looks like I can. I wasn't sure so I assumed the worse.

Of course, it'd be wise to backup critical data just in case...

I use Abit boards so I'm not sure if the RAIDing process is the same on an Asus.

After setting up your Integrated Peripherals in prep for the RAID you may have to press ctrl+I on the POST to setup your stripe size. Also when installing the OS make sure your watch closely and press F6 when it prompts you for RAID drivers. Have the Intel drivers on a seperate floppy as this is the only way to install them. Hope this was helpful and GL.
