View Full Version : bandwidth/cpu for a dedicated server?
i play bf1942 occasionally with a few friends. as a dedicated server, how would the server below in my sig fare? i have a 4000/512kbps cable line but i've never really tried running a dedicated server before...always used one that's playing and only at LANs.
thanks,
Jeremy
well, the only way to know for sure would be to give it a shot.
the SG server is a duallie 1GHz PIII. has 1024MB of memory at 133MHz. BF (and BF:V) use only 1 CPU, but that CPU is running leaner as the OS is SMP capable. if i were to recommend something, i would go with no less than a single 1GHz CPU system with no less than 512MB of RAM running at least 133MHz. mem bandwidth is really important.... especially if you arent loaded up with 16GB of RAM.
the server in your sig would be on the bottom and of what i think is doable.
if you do decide to give it a shot (which i would), i would suggest as small an amount of players as possible (you could probably handle 6 logins if you set the outgoing bandwidth throttle at 56K per client... and the game plays fine at that rate, BTW), and the smallest maps you can tolerate (Berlin, for example). oh, and run the dedicated server app... but that;s pretty much a no brainer.
