Hey SG.... Played with you guys yesterday on your BFV server (ggz btw, will be sure to stop by again) =) I had mentioned a problem I was having with running the game on my brother's laptop and you sent me here... Soo...Here I am! =)

Anyways.. My brother has a laptop (2 ghz P4 proc, 512 RAM, 64mb radeon 9000 with 4.3 cat drivers). We bought him a fresh copy of BFV, and after installing the game, it will not start. We click play (we have tryed running the game in every way we can think of) and the splash screen comes up... Than... Nothing.. It just sits there and stares at me... I go to task manager and CPU useage = 100 (thanks to BFV) and we cannot cancel it, so we are forced to unplug the laptop to reboot it. I have reinstalled the game a couple of times, still no good... I let my friend borrow the game (has same laptop but a radeon 9800) and he said he ran the game fine... So... Is there any hope of my brother getting this to work on his laptop, would love to get him player :) Thanks guys

I think I am the one that sent you here .... It's hard to answer questions when we are battling .... :thumb:


I don't think I can give much advice on the problem at the moment , ( I might think of something on the way home ) ... But I did have a Question for you .

Something else to think about .... Alot of people have had various types of problems with the ATI cards ( me included ) and with the later drivers ... Several of us have found that reverting back to 3.8 and below has helped although I think your problem lies elsewhere ...



Which splash screen are you reffering to ? The Very first one or The one that shows up when you try to join a game or map ?


If it's the first one , do like most of us do, rename your movies folder

\program files\eagames\Battelfield Vietnam\mods\movies ( I think ) to Mooovies ... This will bypass the Splash screen and take you straight to the menu ....

Might help if there is an instruction vialotion during the movie splash .

Hi man, welcome to sg. :)

Are you guys using an anti-virus? Try diabling before you play.

Any refresh rate software? Get rid of it.

Multiple cd roms? try them both/all and with disk 1 and 2.

Disable any other programs that don't need to be running when ya play.

They'll be more ideas from others I'm sure of that. :)

Am running Nortons... and the only thing I am able to disable on it is 1 option (that i know of, forget the name of the option atm as I do not normally work with nortons), and i have no clue what a frame rate program thingy is... So don't think so... other things you mentioned are not an issue I believe...

And as for what splash screen, I'm talking abou tthe one that right when you click the icon, that small screen that comes up when the CD spins up that says BFV on it... Game never loads up =(

p.s. and I guess they do make the 9800 mobile... or I misheard my friend and he said he had a different type of radeon)

Try editing this folder :


X:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield Vietnam\Movies..... Spell it something else ... That splash screen you see is a File executed from that folder. When you rename it , it allows you to bypass the splash screens and the opening trailer and go straight to the Menu ... By changing the folder name it does not look there. Might help if there is a problem with that movie playing ...


If you are using norton ... Disable Autoprotect. Should be an icon in the systray ( lower right hand corner ) that you can right click on and disable.

Might some services running that are causing issues too.

Alrighty, thanks for the advice guys =) Will try changing the movie folder's name when brother gets home... Hope that it works =) Anyone else have any ideas? Does anyone play this game with a radeon 9000 by any chance? Am wondering if the gfx card can't handle it or something *although it does seem unlikely*

Time to add on another lil question... I was thinking of getting a new gfx card, most liekly the 128mb geforce FX5900 (currently a lil over $200 US)...Right now I have a geforce fx5200, 128mb... Am wondering... since they say the new 6500 series will be out in a lil over a month.. should i wait until say mid summer to see if the price on the 5900 drops, or just get it now (when a new series comes out, nvidia tends to drop the old card's prices by $60-100, which is a nice chunk of change). Would get the 5900 256mb.. but... thats currently at 256.. which is kind of.... Alot? :-p hehe

try the new 4.4 drivers and also rename the bfv movies folder to somethign else. Maybe cutting down what its loading will help.
