Going to disable NAT on all of our DSL modems at all of our locations and setup VPN connections with the Sonicwall Tele3 SP firewall. My question is what do I need to know before I disable NAT and try to setup a static route from the modem to the Sonicwall? It says in the config if I disable NAT I need to setup a static route and ive never setup staic routes before. Does the modem need a static IP to setup the route? the DSL connection uses DHCP.

any help greatly appreciated

thanks

Why are you disabling NAT? Do you not want clients to access the internet - just the 'mothership'?

You are confusing NAT with DHCP, and External IP with Internal IP.

If you disable DHCP then you need to use Static IPs. on your LAN computers (this is not an Interent issue).

The Sonic is basically a fancy Cable/DSL Router with VPN in hardware.

It does NAT and DHCP.

You do have to disable the NAT on the DSL Modem.

The Sonic External IP (WAN) side has to be set according to your DSL account. You can not set the WAN to Static if your account is Dynamic.

sorry i guess i wasnt clear. I want to disable NAT on my DSL modem at the store and then put the sonicwall as the device on the network which has NAT. I was loking in the config of the modem/router(actiontec) and it said if I disabled NAT I would have to setup a static route.

I cant setup a site-to-site VPN if the sonicwall is behind a NAT device which the DSL modem/router has. Is this false?

I just have never setup static routes before so I thought that something needed to be static? thats why i ask if the modem needs to have a static ip and not a dynamic ip.

When I did my Sonicwall VPN/WAN, 2 of the sites were given the Cayman modem/routers by the phone company. I'm guessing when you say you want to disable NAT on the DSL modem, that the device you're talking about is a modem/router combo. I had them switch those out with straight modems...keep it simple, static routes will be just one more "thing to fiddle with".

I'd replace them with straight up modems.

what if the phone company doesnt have or want to give me a straight up modem?

I'd try to get one from them. Might take a while, but they'll usually not give you a problem getting them swapped out.

Or

If in a rush, pickup a few elsewhere, like some Efficient Networks Speedsteams.

Or may just have to figure out the static routing and hope that doesn't get in the way of the Sonics.

When having DSL setup for clients, I always demand they get just plain external ethernet modems. Letting the phone company put in their own solution will often hamper your plans, either now, or down the road at some point. I always insist on full control right from the beginning.

this is the modem in one of the stores (http://www.actiontec.com/products/broadband/wireless_ready_dsl_gateway/wireless_ready_dsl_gateway_overview.html) (Qwest DSL), some of our stores have the speedstream modems(new mexico, texas and el paso, all SBC DSL).

here is the manual, NAT is on page 62

Static addressing - not static routes. Completely different animals. Probably a language thing. I can see tying NAT to DHCP, but I can;t see how that would affect static vs dynamic routing...

If your modem/router doesn't support dynamic routing (dountful but possibe) you need to get a new one.
