View Full Version : Can't change home page after DSL install
My internet explorer home page is set to the Verizon DSL webpage after installing software that came with the modem(Verizon software and MSN). The homepage setting is darken in tools->internet options. Removing those programs and running Ad-aware and Spybot search and destroy did not fix the problem. Is there anything I can do?

yea install hijack this (http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html) and run it. the scan only takes a couple seconds.
the dsl software installed a bho.
a little info on bho's here (http://pages.infinit.net/carbo1/bho.html)
warning: don't remove anything you're not sure of. it should be obvious what you want to uninstall. post a screen shot of the scan if you have to.
with dsl, you're better off getting behind a router and then you don't need to install any of their crap. or if you got xp it supports pppoe connections, you just have to configure it in xp.
i assume your dsl is pppoe. mine is.

I always prefer a router over any software means. Even if using XP, use a router. Let the routers NAT protect you.

good point YOS. i was only addressing connection issue alone, not firewall protection.
i don't know about verizon, but with sbcyahoo dsl they say you can't connect to the internet without their software unless you use a router. i could tell you a nightmare story about that sbcyah disc...
i beleive the problem w/ os'es other than xp is that they do not support pppoe, hence the need for router which will support pppoe.
i couldn't agree more that a router should always be used over software, regardless of the os.
and i never install any isp's software, i want nothing from an isp integrated into my browser. this home page hijack is a perfect example of what can happen.
This type of BHO (Browser Helper Object) is not necessarily harmful. In fact, it may not even be a BHO, but the isp software installed a branded version of Internet Explorer. Branded versions of IE and OE are made using the IEAK (Internet Explorer Administration Kit)
You can choose to keep this branded browser and just edit a few registry values to renable the ability to change your homepage:
