i have a drive that has less than 15% free disk space and windows tells me to delete some files, only i don't want to, any way around this ?

i mean what will happen if i defrag it anyways, will it not do it right , or mess up my data ?

any freeware to do this ?

You could destroy data if it is even possible to force it. When your counter top is completely full and you need space, you move other things. No way around it.

You need to move some files - CDR, another drive, etc.

Once you get to 70% capacity you need to aggressively look to add more - be it disk, memory, etc.

Some ideas.

You could compress some files to save space. (zip, rar, etc)
Copy some to another drive, CD, HD or network drive etc

Move files to another drive, then defrag, and put the files back. Any files moved and put back will be defragged in the process.

Use webspace to hold files temporarily if you have any.

You could compress the entire drive, though I wouldn't recommend that.

Live without all that porn and just delete it :D

good idea on compressing some of those files, some i don't know if i will ever really use again, but i want to hold on to them anyways, as far as the pron goes, never delete that is my motto :)

i have tried to add the promise ATA controller card that came with this WD drive so i can run more hard drives in this PC but i just keep getting blue screens so i uninstalled it and said , the heck with it.

i want to have the drives in my main PC for access speed, a lan is too slow sometimes.

A couple of thoughts came to mind as I was reading another thread...

Check the drive for large files that you may have forgotten about, but really don't want. any longer. SequoiaView is great for finding large files.

Check the size of your restore dir, it may be huge. Disable restore, reboot. Then re-enable it and create a restore point right away, or after you defrag.

You need to use the floppy that came with the controller and add the driver before windows starts. When booting (just after BIOS posts), hit F5 and insert the floppy.
From there just follow instructions.

Or, add the drivers while in windows, before you actually physically install the controller card. Then shutdown, and install the card, reboot.

Heck, while your at it, delete all temp IE files, all temp files too, before you defrag.

oh i see, i was installing the card and then letting window find drivers, that is where i was having all kinds of errors about different crap, maybe i should have :rtfm: if only i could find it :)

thanks norm :)

lol
I keep think up other files to delete, and have to post back...

Check the dir you unzip file to, it may be holding a lot of files you don't want.
Any folders that hold downloads etc, too.
Empy recycle bin
uninstall programs you don't like, or use anymore.

Look around your drive manully through explorer, I'm sure you'll find more you don't want. I always do.

I'll leave the rest you. You know more about what's on your drive than I.

I was going to suggest temporarily moving to CD or another partition the i386 folder. Tweak UI will let you move the My Documents folder too.

Temporally set the pagefile to 20mb

well i tried to get this card running again tonite for about 2 hours and i must be doing something wrong :(

i tried booting with the floppy in there and pressing F-5 but it kept saying "non system disc"

so i installed the drivers from within windows and shut down, installed card and it was telling me that no drivers where installed.

i downoladed new drivers from WD and promise and after i could get it to install the drivers, which took a few tries, i thought i finally had it installed then 3 minutes later i got a blue screen, saying irq=not less than blah blah........

i did have a hard drive plugged into the card as i was trying to install drivers, think that would mess it up ?

i just uninstalled it again and yanked it out of the case, wanted to throw it across the freakin room

maybe it is conflicting with the ST3MP28 SCSI controller that is onboard with this mobo ?

maybe i should uninstall it because i don't use it, btu may use it some day.

frustrated end user am I

Mark, that is what you are doing wrong. Re-read my post. I never said to boot with the floppy in the drive. The floppy is NOT a boot disk, hence your error.

Now you'll need to remove any drivers you've tried to install before attempting again.

Step x step
Boot to Windows
Uninstall any/all drivers for the controller (usually under scsi devices) from device manager.
Shut down
Take the controller card out of your machine.
Boot to windows
Shut down, or reboot.

Boot past Bios post routines.
Hit F5 when when you see the option at bottom of screen to Install any scsi or raid controllers.
Put the floppy in.
Follow instructions
Shut down
Insert your controller card into a PCI slot. Screw it down.
Reboot, and windows should find and install the drivers.

When you install the driver as per the above, the installer looks for a file on the floppy named txtsetup.oem
Check to see that the file is there.

I went through a tough time installing mine a while back. Can't remember now if I installed the win2k version on XP, or if the XP version actually worked.

i will try that another nite, just too tired to mess with anymore today, thanks.

i just checked and the bios doesn't give me an option to hit f-5 or f-6 for installing any scsi controllers, when i hit f-5 it asks how i want to boot windows, like safe mode, vga mode, ect.

i know my older abit board does give the option though.

Been there myself :)

btw - You can also install the drivers from within windows, but be sure to remove any you've already installed, and remove the controller card from the PC first.

Put the card in AFTER installing the drivers.

If it still bluie screens, you've got bad drivers, or more likely a bad controller.

i know my older abit board does give the option though. The Bios doesn't give the option to hit F5, windows does (very early in the boot process).

You may have to hit your pause/break key to see it though if you get past that point before your monitor warms up enough to see the screen.

It should be fairly painless from windows itself.
Could be your card is a POS

Is it a geniune Promise controller, or is it a perversion of one.

Mine is a Maxtor perversion. It works ok, though it had me pulling out hairs at first because I installed it "physically" first..before installing the drivers
Got 'stop' errors and windows wouldn't boot.

well, what i did to add another drive was purchase an Abit IDE to SATA converter from someone online, changed a jumper on the mobo and added drive, all is good for now.
i still want to try the card in another PC someday to see if it is dead or if there is just a conflict with this system.
