Well i bought a new DELL computer. All went well for 2 weeks and a friend ran Ataware and after that when we rebooted we are unable to get on the internet. Rogers(the provider in Toronto On.) SAYS i MUST RELOAD my WinXP software . Also Dell says since my ip starts with I forgot the # they quotes(254) they cant do anything for me. Is there a way to reset the IP I have in the system from the provider? I tried reseting the modem and all but to no avail . What wrong with all this????? Please advise

Adaware might have thought that the Rogers software was spyware. Go grab your friend(?) and run Adaware and undo the changes that were made.

Also, the Rogers software has a Self Healing feature that can be found in the start menu or you can download the Self Healing Software at:

Why Not just run a repair On Win XP or try uninstalling rogers software . Then reinstalling it. I am not sure but releasing the Ip and renewing it might not work . beings you already tried resetting the modem. You can go to the command promp on your menu in win Xp and click on it. At the the prompt after your name tpye IPCONFIG then hit enter and see if it brings up your Ip . If Not. At the next prompt Type ipconfig\release and hit enter. Then at the next prompt type ipconfig\renew. If this still dose not work. here is a artical from Microsoft on how to rebuild your internet protcol. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;299357 Hope this helps

Some spyware messes with winsock and can cause an internet/network connection to have problems. Up until I found this little app, reinstalling XP was the only way to fix it.

Give that app a try, it's worked for me without any problems.
It also has a button to backup the registry before using it.
Make sure you use that button, just in case.

download and update then do a scan with SpyBot 1.2 http://beam.to/spybotsd & Ad Aware 6.0 http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download to remove any spyware then install and update SpywareBlaster to stay spyware FREE. YOU MUST USE BOTH AD AWARE & SPYBOT TO ENSURE YOU ARE SPYWARE FREE SINCE ONE FINDS WHAT THE OTHER MISSES.

It's good to have two different spyware apps different of cirteria of database so what one program skips the other picks up as stated above.

Although Rogers gives you some proprietary software, you don't need anything to set up.
Just plug in the cable and you're on the Internet.
I would do a system restore, if possible, to eliminate any junk you may have installed.

That app rebuilds the TCP\IP stack, and removes any tweaks made, as well as deleting any registry keys that could have been added by browser hyjackers, spyware etc that would affect winsock and a internet connection.
Pretty much puts XP TCP settings back to default.
THIS APPS SAVED MY BUTT! tHANKS TO NORM
