I can't get winxp home edition to boot. No boot disk. I have the 6 floppies but they keep crapping out in the middle of the install. Does anyone know a way to boot from a win98 boot disk? Or another way to get the install cd to run? This isn't funny anymore......lol don

The Dos way... Using a Win98 startup floppy.
Baically.....
Put smartdrv.exe on your boot floppy execute it, navigate to the i386 dir on the CD, and execute winnt.exe in Dos from the boot floppy.
Type the following commands at the A:>prompt and hit [enter] after each command.

smartdrv
x: (the letter of your CDRom)
cd i386
winnt

If you don't execute smardrv, the install will take all day.
You can find smartdrv.exe in any win98 PC in c:\windows\command\

Is the system not able to boot from the WinXP cd-rom? Or is it a special OEM package without an OS cd-rom, but some "restore" cd?

Thanks for the tips, but i had already tried that and it didn't work. I finally went into the Bios and set the cdrom to boot first and away we went. Booted right up, did the reinstall and everything is fine now. I did have to do an fdisk for fear that the files causing the problems were still live and active on the hard drive. The fdisk did the trick. Too many frickin hackers on the net. . thanks again. don
