Ok which is it.. Nivida or Raedon? LOL I was currently looking to upgrade my comp with a Nivida FX5950 which I think should go right in comp? Geforce 3TI500 take same power requirements and such as the 5950?

Right now the 9800XT is the best card on the market. But you CPU will be a bottleneck. You wont see the full potential of the card.

I Agree

I think a 9600pro or 9600XT will do

considering the price, I'd lean towards a sapp radeon 9800pro. i think it's hovering right above 200 now.

Im with zooner on this one.

I just wish I had waited to get y 9600 pro because now I could have gotten a 9800 pro for the same price :)

Radeons are faster, but in my opinion, nvidia's drivers perform better and are more stable than the ATi drivers.

Radeon 9800xt is currently the champ. They simply dominated nVidia last year, but nVidia did play quite a bit of catchup this past fall, their latest series has gotten closer to the 9800xt. But if you're someone who cranks up the graphics features...the nVidia's start falling behind again, in performance, and image quality.

Best bang for the buck, look for 9800 non-pro's...and even the 128 meg 9800 pro's have come down substantially in price. For just a few dollars more than the 9600xt....the 9800's can perform so much more than the 96. In todays games you can't tell all that much between the 9600 and 9800...but in the games about to come out in a few months....you surely will. And if I were to plunk down money right now for a card, I'd not want to wish I spent 40 dollars more and got the 9800 come a few months.

you're half right yosc. the plain 9800 is an excellent card, but for the love of god, make sure you don't ever buy the SE. it's a 9800 card.... only with half of the pipes open. huuuuge waste of money. but video cards aside, in order to POWER this beast, you're going to need a new ps. i had, well, basically the same configuration you did when i updated my video card, only with less ram. the basic power requirement for a 9800pro is 350 w, but that can be fudged. as long as you have a STABLE power source (i mean exceptionally stable in the 12v range), you can dip down to 200. why 200? well, a friend of mine has a shuttle, and the shuttle ps' is only 200, but it's an incredibally powerful and high quality 200. i went through three ps' looking for a good one, and finally got one that i like. it's a $70 thermaltake 480w ps. with that i power 1 gb pc3200 ddr ram, p4 3.0 800fsb, 2 7200 rpm hds (160, 40), two blue cathode lights, 5 case fans, the 9800 xt, p4p800 d motherboard. two of the fans are led. so i have a lot sucking on my powersource, and i have yet to have a problem. anyway, the two companies that i would NOT recommend buying a power source from are dynapower usa and powmax. get a good power source. with both of those, my system was unstable and frequently shut down randomly (ok ok, and the dynapower (came with my case) actually caught fire). anyway, my recomendation would be the 9800 pro by asus. because of it's exceptional cooling system (the same one they stuck on the 9800xt), you can just flash the card with the xt bios and have the exact same card for $130 less. it costs about $330 right now at newegg. also, it comes with a buttload of free software, including hl2. so the real price is $280 (because you know you're gonna get hl2 when it comes out, so that's $50 less that you have to spend).

I was never including the SE in any of them, those are a joke, like the nVidia "MX" series. I mentioned the 9800 non-pro, and 9800 pro.

And yes about the power sources. I'm Antec or Enermax...only 2 I'll spend money on...PERIOD. A lesser wattage QUALITY power supply is far superior than a junker brand at twice the wattage.

And the memory interface comparison? ;) ;) It's not just about clock speed.

9800 non-pro still tromps is
http://firingsquad.com/hardware/ati_radeon_9600_xt/default.asp

I'm not doggin the 9600's...it's just, if I were to purchase an entry level card now, I'd want something that would handle tomorrows games well. Over the past couple of months, the prices of the 9800 non-pro, and 128 meg 9800 pro, have dropped so much....they almost become entry level instead of mid-range. Kinda solid on the "best bang for the buck" now from the ATI camp.

6 months ago? Couldn't say that. Thus is the highly fluid graphics market.

Well...on January 28th, you guys endorsed my buy...it was an Asus 9600XT. Everybody in that thread said it was good. So in 1 months time...from 28 Jan to 3 Mar....my purchase is now an unwise one? Mind you...I paid $190 ANd get HL2.

Have a 9800Pro 256MB, 9600XT. Both great cards, from what I have seen/used of there Nvidia counterparts I can't say I am impressed yet. But for sub $200 Nvidia is the way to go.

Entry level: GeForce FX5200 Ultra (Approx: $100)
Simply amazing card for the value market, some of my more "financially challenged" friends have these and play BF1942, UT2k4, etc. on them, not the best graphics or performance but for the price it's great

Mid-High level: Radeon 9600XT (Approx: $180), 9800Pro (Approx: $270) Both have a huge performance boost from the above card, nice graphics, nice performance, never had any trouble running today's games in good settings.

Max level: Radeon 9800XT (Approx: $465)
I don't have one and have never used one, slightly faster than a 9800Pro, basicly not necessary to spend the extra because by the time that extra power is required by games the next generation should be out, but if you simply want the best this is the one for you.

You can get decent power for some pretty low prices today but in response to your original question. "ATI vs. Nvidia", ATI currently holds the title.

(Above prices are ATI brand retail box cards from Newegg.)

Good thing I didn't open the box cause now I'm thinking I should sell my 9600XT.

Trade up to a 9800 Pro is not to bad as far as cash, but really nice performance boost, and if the box is still sealed or at least the card still sealed you could practicly get retail price for it. :thumb:

Nah, it's not an unwise one! First...it's an Asus. Second, you got that vaporware coupon...ROFL. It's OK, I have a few myself. Third....everybodies expectations of what they want from their equipment is different!

Check out the charts on the review I posted above..it's not like the 9600 performance sucks! It's quite good.

It's just my opinion, if I were to shop around right now for an entry...to mid range graphics card, I'd probably bump into the next price bracket to get a 9800 non-pro or even a pro. A few months ago (yes even just in January)...that price jump was considerably more. The lower and mid range cards have really been slashed lately pricewise.

Thanks for the PM and reply. I guess I'm just wondering since my entire system is not cutting edge...will I benefit more from a 9800 Pro. If the caard is gonna be bottlenecked then I'll just wait and build an entirely new system with a top of the line card...9800XT or better if and when it comes out.

This current system was built around a music creation/video editing concept...and then comes along BF1942 and ruins my life. LOL So now I'm a gamer again.

BTW...the firingsquad review was a really good one and it differed from the [H] one I'd read before.

How so?

For lower end I cannot argue, I use all Nvidia in my lower end or non-gaming systems, but mid level market and up ATI has the most powerful cards and the drivers are WAY better than they used to be.

Even the mobile gaming market, a once completely Nvidia controlled territory, has been almost completely taken over by ATI's new mobile upgradable graphics.
