OK it's been at 48 players for quite some time now. Pro's and Con's...and where is the happy medium to have it set.

I was on for 3 plus hours last night, most of it spent with over 40 player logged in at any time. Server ran great, not even near pushing its limits. Some admins complained of lag..."don't run that remote manager on same computer you're playing on". Temporary bug? I think so, new version out soon. I run it on computer next to me, even easier..simply turn to my right...click player, kick or ban.

Pros...
*Lots of peeps, seems more crowded more often. Server advertising as a large server attract more players?
*Seems since more players than vehicles, some players end up, for lack of anything else, having to help out as a team player. I saw more peeps standing at flags, guarding them, reparing vehicles, etc.

Cons...
*When spawn, sometimes have to wait for quite some time for a vehicle, since they're all gone already, and leads to more "racing to get it first".

I dunno, I had a lot of fun last night when it was jammed full. I think most of us did. Just looking for opinions...if most of you think it's set too high, or if you like it, feedback...

Only prob I've run into in a full house is you jump into a vehicle and the minute you move you TK someone because they are running for vehicles, that kinda sucks, but hey, its all good :)

The more the merrier. I had a great time too. There were points where there were armored columns were rolling on check points, and choppers had troops deploying via parachute.:D It made for some great game play. Besides every army needs foot soliders.;) Lag was not an issue at all on my end at all.

I agree it seems like more people actually try to capture the flags and work as a team. I did notice a few people shooting at the equipment as it was leaving because they didn't get it, but I don't think that is ever going to change. If they do it enough I usually just turn around and waste them. I hate it when people do that.

I was taking off in the little bird last night and some one was in a black hawk gun ship shooting me. I tried to fly up beside them to get his name and ended up smacking rotars. Sorry to the other people in that chopper.

Anyway it was action packed last night. Never did see KoF, even though I was really hoping they would show. I really wanted to waste them, it would have been fun SG vs KoF.:D

Now that I've found my problem..im not to bothered. But here's my pro's and con's

Pro's: Lots of targets to kill :D Complete chaos! Turn up your speakers, woofers and sounds like WWIII coming from your room!

Con's: no vehicles, harder to admin, smacktards shooting at you if you beat them to a vehicle.

*Remember Cat getting TK'ed for a vehicle and then seeing Cat saying "Hell no! Wrong mistake for TK'ing me" something along those lines..was funny as hell!! Imagine TK'ing the owner of the server :rotfl: Bad move :D

It was an awesome time last night. Lots of people and lots of fraggin.

It is a little crappy to wait for a plane/Humvee/tank/whatever. However, it is really fun anyhow.

I say in the mid to high 30's should be max.

Ok...just for the record, shooting your handgun at a departing tank is a way to ask for a ride lol.

Had it happen to me a couple of times....I always stop to give someone a lift....and therefore, expect one in return.

If you just ask for transportation.....the driver of the vehicle doesn't know who it is or where they are.

If you're being shot and no one is in front of you....they must be behind you asking for a ride.

========================

As for my thoughts on the server capacity....I had the best time last night. I love it when it's crowded....but not crowded with a-holes mind you.

Last nights crowd seemed pretty cool...only a couple stupid kick votes. Had a really nice time.

I say 48 is great....

:D

Yeah I forgot to mention that....it was very cool seeing the C-130 or choppers flying way up overhead...with streams of parachutes jumping out. And yes...columns of tanks and armored vehicles....just made for some very cool warfare!

:D Yeah I saw you cracking up over that. LOL. He blatantly shot me right in the back...ran over my body to hop in the T-72. Not like he was already spawned and running for it either...I was there for a while defending the flag, and was already heading for the tank. So by the time I kicked him (actually think I banned)...he only drove the tank a hundred feet away or so...I spawned and got it back.

I suspect we're right at the upper limit of what my machine can tolerate and still be playable. I'm fine on the larger, more spread out maps, but I get really choppy on small ones like Deserted Village. I figger I must be choking on drawing 40 something people. My pings are fine, I know it isn't the server's fault.

Despite that, I definitely had a great time last night. Gazala was a real challenge, people parachuting in all over the place.

Anyone ever try to go down the inside staircase in the skyscraper on Urban Siege? Took me forever, every 2 or 3 flights the game would decide I was falling- my guy would start screaming, and I'd have to pop my chute to get moving again :) Now I'm wondering if I could have parachuted right down the middle of it and saved myself the time...

Yeah I tossed that map back in the mix...figuring the 1.6 and .7 makeovers would fix the issues on that map...but apparently not. Fun map....but that map itself has some serious performance issues that I don't think would go away 2.8 GHz Xeons for CPU's.

The number of people was irritating for me at first. Then I started looking at it as a way to learn a different method of play. I really sucked on all the maps that I'm usually OK at. I won't suck for long. Keep it with lots of people, cut it down, either way I'll keep playing.

Now, about needing more admins.... :D

my 2nd rig was chuggin along as hard as it could to keep up last night, I got major lag as soon as I came within point blank range of anyone. I have a feeling my main rig would have handled it just fine, but 40-somethin' people is pushing the threshhold a bit for my backup rig. I'd say 36 or so tops.

Sucks when the server gets full and I can't connect.. :( I wasn't sure whether coming in here and posting about it would even do any good so I just kept trying and eventually I got in.

Definately had more lag with 40 something people in there. I liked 32.

Add the admins to your IM list. They'll kick so you can get in. Usually there are a couple people in there that aren't even playing.

yeah.. I really need to put an IM proggie back on my PC.. I have usernames for just about all of them.

Which IM network do most of the admins use? ICQ?

48 players gets insane. I don't usually player on the servers that allow more than 36 players.
My machine is plenty fast & have good bandwith, but you do sometimes get lag when you have that many players. Its more enjoyable with ~32 or so players.

Immy, Blisster, Mountainman, Illini25, use mainly MSN...

Cat and Faust are on ICQ. Don't know about Needle or Bouncer.

I don't like it much when there are too many people playing. Seems over-crowded and no where to go almost. It seems like people are more in your way, rather than being on your team and helping....

Get together with a small squad of SG peeps when it's crowded. Randy, Hansolo, Ace420, and myself usually get together and using teamspeak coordinate our attacks.

Yep... shoot me an IM and I'll make room for ya.

I use MSN, AIM, and ICQ. MSN is almost always on unless I'm playing. Even then, I'll turn it on using my 2nd rig and then just peek in every now and then to see if help is needed with getting in.

yeah, I've used trillian for awhile and I'll probably reinstall the latest version.. my problem is having all those IM networks connected at once, I get a barrage of IM's from people I don't always have time to talk too.. Thats mainly why I stopped using the IM's.. it just starts to take up too much time just chatting.

I'll load trillian back up and only load up specific accounts.. then I should be in the clear from constant IM's.

I had Yahoo awhile back and prolly still have a ICQ accound from my DF/DF2 days...I'll look into setting MSN when I get the PII500 online as my admin box...

I have been having the same problem also. It played totally fine before and the only thing I have done lately was add more ram. My pings are always about 50 so I am with ya on this. :(

I reeled it down to 40 players max this morning. You guys who still experience lag, you have your connection speeds turned down a bit? I've been on when it's packed...if the server was gagging, it would be laggy for everyone, and most of us experience no slow downs.

I recently turned down my connection to 56k in the game options and it's a lot more smoother. I played on the server last night when the server was completely full and it ran fine. On the other hand, im not a big fan of monster servers. When there's that many players, it kinda becomes boring just standing there. So I just became an engy and started following tanks and fixing them. Only thing I could do from being bored, lol.

Cat,

I know a lot of use has been requesting this and that lately. I know it's hard trying to make everyone happy. Hopefully there will be a happy medium for everyone regarding tickets, maps, number of players, ect. Hope this server isn't causing you any grief or anything like that. Don't want friendships, trust to be broken in any of this..after it's just a game. :)

How about a subscription based password for a dedicated server? Just throwing it out as an idea... The subscription based server ($$ per player/month) would have a password which could emailed to subscribers monthly. Money could be used for bandwidth costs, upgrades, etc.
Could two instances of dedicated BF DC be running on this server (one for password one for public)? Subscription server would obviously have less people connecting to it, so the system load wouldn't be topped out. I'm basing my estimates on Cat's report about system load in an ealier thread.
Maybe have SG scrims and "squad training" on there for subscribers who wanted it. Ideas?

Pros:
--More money to subsidize the public server (less of a hit on Yosc).
--play with familiar people and keep out smacktards

Cons:
--maybe it would get stale after a while...
--keeping track of who's legit and who's not, would be a hassle.

You hit the nail on the head right there. What happens when you fill the server slots and more people are still willing to pay? Its not always easy to go out and grab another server and slice of bandwidth.

The tracking could be done pretty easily I think. In fact, if YOSC does think this is a good idea, I'd be more than happy to help out with a web based system.:)

BTW Cat, I have had it set to 56K since the thread popped up about that. Maybe my computer was just having a random fit, will have to wait and see when it gets busy at a later time... But it seems lately that it just runs horrible when a lot of people are on... Thanks for lowering the limit and I will see how it is :D
