OK this is rediculous, after 3 days I still cannot connect my 2 Win XP comps to each other on lan. Neither computer sees the others IP address wich is 192.168.1.100 and .101 for comps 1 and 2. I have the XP firewall disabled on both, have no other firewalls up. I am using a linksys router, both comps have access to the web, and each other as far as file sharing.
Some sites suggest changing both comps ISP numbers, but when I do that I lose my ISP. Also in the network connection wizard it asks for the xp CD, which I do not have, only thing supplied with my comps was a thin Win XP booklet with no CD.
I dont understand why this is so difficult for one comp to find the other one over a single Cat5 wire... What am I doing wrong? If anyone replies to this please act like I am networking inept (if it isnt already obvious) when giving a solution. I can fix anything else comp wise but nothing to do with networking.

Question 1....does internet work fine?
No you don't want to assign IP's from your ISP...the router obtains that. The router maintains the IP's of the LAN side of it (192.168.1.100, etc).
Can each computer at least ping the other, and get replies?

Yes both connect to the internet fine... How do I ping the other comp again? MSDOS promt, then what?
Scratch taht I figured it out. I pinged both comps, both get the required packets w/ 0% loss.

Now what?
I just want to play games over my lan... None can connect to the other one, either it just says please wait for hours or cannot find server.
My router says my address is 192.168.1.100 while the Diablo game in this case says its .102. Do I need to change something?

OK I tried that and it says to reconfigure your IP address, as soon as I do that I lose internet access...
Right click 'My Computer' and go to properties---> computer name----> click change... from there select 'Workgroup' and type a simple name.
reboot and do the same to the other comp using the same name...
then open network places and look for other comp.
should also be able to lan now

I can already view my other computer on the network, they both have the same network group name, I re-did it, however, and still cannot connect over lan.
So let me see if I understand your problem.
You have two computers connected to a Linksys Router which connects you to the Internet.
Computer 1 has an IP of 192.168.1.100 and Computer 2 has an IP of 192.168.1.101
Both computers can access the Internet (websites, email, etc...).
Both computers have the same Workgroup Name and different Computer Names.
You can see the other computer under Network Neighborhood.
You can access and or transfer files through Network Neighborhood from one computer to the other.
But when you try to play games the two computers can not see each other over the LAN.
Do I have it right?
If I do then make sure one of your two computers is set up as a Server for the game. Then have the other computer connect to the Server to play.

Yes you have it right. How do I set up one as the server?
Should be somewhere in the options of the game. Its different for every game depending what menu they put it under. Sorry, but you will probably have to dig around the menu's for it.
