I have an onboard lan which I dont use (i use a wireless card) but that annoying icon appears by the clock with a red "X" over it and keeps popping up a message from time to time saying network cable unplugged........outside of disabling it is there anyway to get rid of that icon/message???
Network Properties>Local Area Network Properties
On the General Tab there is a box "show icon in notification area when connected"
Uncheck that box.

Yes I saw that and did that but its still there with a red x and a balloon that pops up saying network cable unplugged.
Its just annoying more than anything else.
I dont really like disbling devices but I can to prevent that.
Any registry keys that you know of??
haven't found a reg hack for it, but I found this:
"you can change the Task Bar properties for the icon to "Hide when inactive" and that should get rid of it."

Ahhhh I never new there was an "Always Hide" feature
Hide when inactive was alredy there but always hide did the trick.
I always overlook the simplest things *lol*
Thanks Norm:D
One way or another we WILL take charge of these computers :)
Glad the hide feature is good enough.
I have to go out and see what I can do for a 98 machine that won't boot.
Later Rainbow.

You can also disable the network connection and the icon will go away, that's what I do on my laptop. Go to your network connections, right click your onboard lan, select disable. Simple enough and works!
I would recommend disabling the onboard from the BIOS if possible. If you aren't using that 'nic' it will only serve to slow network performance, and take an IRQ for nothing.

Wouldn't really worry about a single IRQ in this day and age. Uggg, bringing back to many memories of ISA cards.... :rotfl:

Nah, no worries really, and if it's disabled in windows that will do the trick as well. No big deal, but if it's just hidden, it will take an IRQ, and some resourses. I think it will reserve some ram too.
The main thing is if it is left enabled, and only hidden, windows will see it as another network (I'm pretty sure) and will check it for a connection, slowing network performance, and possibly slowing windows performance a bit too.
Keep your machine lean, and windows runs mean.
Hey, it ryhmes. :D

Disabled devices have a negative overall effect on performance though?????

I've never noticed any.

But a device that is enabled and hidden would. Not a big hit, but it will use resourses if it's enabled, where it won't if it's disabled.
Hiding it just keeps the icon out of your face, that's all.
