Okay, here is the deal, for the last 2 years we have had 6 ip's, 1 free and 5 paid. As of late, we noticed that a random system would "lose" net connection and wind up with a 169.whatever ip. The only way the random computer could hit the net was if another system was shut down.

Called Comcast and was informed that we never had 6 ip's (1 free 5 paid) well after some arguing and a showing of bills.. we proved we did pay and used 6. (getting a 2 year refund for the "phantom ip as we speak) but, I need help...

when I lived in Phx, AZ we had a simialr circumstance, but we used 1 computer as a server and then had 8 others on the net and only had to pay for 1 ip..

What I am trying to do is something similar once again. I have 1 system (a clunker P-3 500mhz 512 ram) as a "server" with 2 NIC cards, 1 D-Link the other IBM.. the D-Link is connected to the Cable Modem the IBM is connected to an 8 Port hub.

the "server" can hit the net fine but the other computers on the network cannot. 4 machines running various versions of XP and 2 running Win2K Pro.

The XP machines we told to work through another computer for net access and for a home network. All setup as WORKGROUP (yes my old Win 3.1 days still haunt me).

What have I missed that is causing the 6 computers to not see each other or the net?

The only reason I am trying to do this is because we absolutely need the 6 computers to hit the net (hell would freeze over before someone would give up access lol) but Comcast will now only give us 5 total IP's.

Thanks in advance...

How did you 'tell' the other machines to use the server? Did you set up ICS correctly on the server?

What is the servers OS? If your running offical windows server software then you need to enable "routing and remote access services" and during the configuration you need to tell it its a NAT router. If your using standard OS then turn on ICS and use the wizard to configure the other systems.

Or just go and get a 6 port broadband router:D

If you had a 6 port router connected to the cable modem and all 6 computers plugged into the router, you would only need 1 IP.
Paying for 5 is a big waste of money. Comcast must love you.
