This is my current setup:

-A 3Com HomeConnect ADSL modem.
-a 9-port D-Link DE-809TP hub

Modem connects to hub, and two other computers connect to hub. I share internet, files and printers fine.

How I was forced to "upgrade" to a different modem. Now when I plug my modem into the hub, it can't be detected unless I plug it into the "uplink" port and have uplink on. Why is that?

Others can give a more detailed description, but basically it has to do with the wiring of the ethernet port. When you connect a computer to the hub, that's a "regular" connection. But when you connect one hub to another hub, using a regular ethernet cable, then you need to have an uplink port. (It has to do with which wires inside the cable are used to transmit data and which are used to receive)

My guess is that your old modem autosensed whether it was connected to an uplink port or a regular port and adjusted itself accordingly, but the new modem doesn't do that, so you have to make sure to connect it to the uplink.

Hope that helped. I know it was pretty vague :(

Some broadband modems are like that, they're not "all" the same, I've seen both kinds.
