I have an XP system and a 95 system. They are both connected to a D-Link router/firewall which is set up to block everything apart from port 80 to the XP system where an Apache server is waiting.

For ages, I have had a shared folder on the XP system which I can see from both machines. When I set it up, it looked safe enough from a security point of view. I want to be able to read and write to the directory from either machines, but do not want to share the contents with the net the other side of the router.

This afternoon, I decided it would be useful to have a shared folder on the 95 disk as well. Setting it up, it offered very little in the way of access options. If I wanted to have read and write access, I had just one choice.

Is this safe, or do I risk sharing the contents of that folder with anyone who cares to look?

If set corretly it should be safe.

However you can install NetBEUI and use it as the default protocol for the LAN. NetBEUI can not pass to the Internet.

Personally I could care less about NetBEUI in this day in age. Here’s the thing TCP/IP is routable, now with the default windows settings NetBEUI is bonded to TCP/IP. Since TCP/IP is routable if you didn’t have a firewall/router then there would be some concern but sine you have a router in place there shouldn’t be a thing to worry about.

Thanks. I didn't think it would be a problem as I figured I would have to have more open on the router to enable access.

I deleted NetBEUI when I set up the LAN protocol to be IPX/SPX rather than TCP/IP.
