I currently have a Linksys BEFSX41 firewall router, connected to my PC.

I'm getting a PowerBook about mid-week, and want to be able to use it wirelessly, but also keep my PC under the firewall router.

Do I need to just get a wireless router and dump my current one, or can I plug a CAT5 cable from the current router to a wireless one and have it work?

Considering prices....I'd go with a new wireless router. Something with built-in WPA and firewall/NAT/etc....

I assume that Apple uses the same protocols and whatnot so they should all be able to communicate to the wireless base station.....but that is a big if.

Oh...I assumed that a router with wireless functionality was strictly wireless. Thanks!

Anyone have a recommendation? I'd like a wireless router that has a firewall.

you can just get an access point if your in love with your current router. I have the linksys WAP11 and its works just fine.

I got my parents the netgear rp314. works great, they probably have some new units out. it has 4 port switch and I believe it will handle 100 wireless connections.

Yes. And it's about the only one out there as well.

Stateful packet inspection and intrusion detection....thumbs up.

Simple, 2 basically 2 choices.
1) Replace existing ethernet router with a wireless router. Most wireless routers still have built in 4 port ethernet switches for your "wired" computers. All routers you purchase for the home broadband market have built in hardware firewalls purely by how they work...NAT. Better models will add SPI to that.

2) Purchase an "Access Point"..which you simply uplink to a LAN port of your existing router. Basically an access point is treated like another hub, or switch, that's really all they are...a wireless switch.

I have the LinkSys WRT54G. Great combo wireless/wired router. And that's coming from an old hardcore Netgear RT314 fan which YOSC help me setup a million years ago. ;)

BTW: The setup on this baby took all of 5 minutes, including unpacking the box!

Thanks for all the replies, everyone. I think I'll try out the Netgear one...I'll get back to this thread once I've set everything up.
