About 2 hours ago, my nic card just went crazy. I have 2 nic card running on this computer and they are both Realtek Nic Card. Just a couple days ago, my computer were infected with many spybot worms and adware and also a couple hack worm(i think). Before I could disable and enable my Local Area Connection easily, now I cant even disable it. Every time i try to disable it, it will give me a message saying "Error Disabling Connection It is not possible to disable the connection at this time. The connection maybe using one or more protocol or do not support plug and play..." I have try to reinstall windows, changing to windows server 2003 and still none of them solve my problem. I am running on Windows Xp Professional now and I have run serveral Virus scan and found many virus, but it was all removed. I have also install Windows again twice. Can anyone help?

Can you slave that HD into another computer with an up to date antivirus...and run a scan on it?

Once an OS is hosed pretty badly, especially after trying to re-install an OS (and another OS) on top of itself....sometimes it's better to format and install on a clean slate.

I have try that, and i did manage to run the anti-virus software. It found 5 spybot and it was all remove. But I did do a clean install where I do a COMPLETE format and install windows XP again. I did not install it one on top of another. Still my network card is really slow. Well one is really slow and seems to lost connection and one is really fast. I have try to replace the network card with another one but if i do, windows will not boot up. The reason is because I have usb2 card on my computer. If i remove the usb 2 then the windows will boot up and both cards will be fast. But Why does it happen now and now a year ago when i purchase the usb2 card. I dont understand. Why Cant i disable the local area connection.

Ohh yeah, I did try to put this Network card that is slow into another computer. And it function perfectly, not a single packet loss. I wonder it happens to this computer and why does it happens just now. No matter how many time I reformat, It would still do the same.

Well, now I only want to know why does the Error Disabling Connection message came on. I wonder if any experiences the same problem and find a way to disable.

Can you put the card in another slot? Sounds like you may have a IRQ conflict.

I do remember once I had a problem with USB and a NIC. Basically I forced a speed and duplex on the NIC and for some odd reason it hosed the USB.

Try sticking the card in another slot and maybe setting bios to failsafe settings.

I have try to change the card to another slot I have try to pull out everything and just leave the Nic Cards. On my motherboard there are 6 PCI slot and if I have the USB2 in any of those slot, and if i put the nic card in the wrong slot in the other 5 slots left, the computer will fail to boot. Let say if I have USB2 in slot 2 and put nic in slot 5 and if it is not compatible. My computer will no be able to boot. That is really weird, this happens just a while and not long ago, I wonder why.

About the only thing I can think of is try to reserver the IRQ in bios for the USB card.

You may find that the USB 2 card uses more than 1 IRQ. I have a 5 port USB 2 card from ADS. It has 3 host controllers on it and uses 3 IRQ's. Each host controller can handle 2 ports and has it's own IRQ. You need to pause the PC during bootup to see it on the BIOS screen. It's the screen that pops up just before DMI pool data message shows up. Once you get into windows they all show up on one virtual IRQ. 1 of the IRQ's used by my USB card is shared with my NIC and 1 with my onboard USB, no problems that I know of. Low level format of the hard drive may be a good idea, to get rid of any boot sector viruses. Might want to scan all your disks and any burned cd's on another PC for viruses just to be sure they are clean. My motherboard has 6 PCI slot's also. They share IRQ's in groups, slot1 and 4, slot2 and 5, slot3 and 6. If you do some digging you should be able to find out how yours are setup and maybe move some cards around to avoid conflicts. If you are not using your onboard com ports I would disable them in the BIOS. Same deal for the parallel port, if you're not using it disable it in BIOS to free up extra resources.

Network cards...the preferred slot is PCI slot #2 (down from the top). Try to avoid using the very top PCI slot, as well as the bottom one.

Try to reset BIOS to defaults, also might think about updating your BIOS.

Then try disabling onboard devices, such as those old serial COM ports and that LPT port, if you're not using them. Disable them in BIOS, and it's less resources (such as IRQ's amongst other things) that are used. Frees up resources for other things, and leads to a "leaner" system.
