I was just wondering if you guys are using joy sticks for flying. I have had no luck flying the Helicopters. The attack helicopters aren't as bad as the medical and gunships.

I have no problem flying the jets with a keyboard and mouse, helo's....forget it.

I guess I just gave away my weakness, if you see Rouse in a Helo don't worry about shooting him, he will crash sooner than later!:D

I fly with ONLY the keyboard

the A and D keys spin you horizontally.... the left and right arrows bank you left and right

So I just use the awsd keys and the up,down,left,right... takes a bit to get used to but I like it.

I set the small missiles to the control key and the bigger missles/bombs to the left alt key :D

Then u wont need the mouse.

You really want a joystick. I've done both....actually learned flying on a computer flight sim using the keyboard only in the Win3.x days (Aces of Europe, etc). So not like I'm not used to the KB....but man....joystick just gives you so much more control, and instinct with the reflexes. Currently using the old Microsoft Sidewinder 3D Pro...just ordered a Logitech Extreme USB since my ancient Sidewinder is finally starting to act fritzy now and then.

You've gotta be kidding me? You're darned good with that thing...hover nice and low and in place, slowly circling, wow. I wanna say you're probably the best I've seen on the server with the Apache.

keyboard & mouse also :)

I have my joystick configured for BF, but the damn thing is so sensative it's actually easier to fly with the keyboard / mouse.

Yea man ace flies damn good. I'm getting better but I still cant grab the flags like ace does in the helicopter.. that is so damn hard.

Speaking of joysticks, anyone played Secret Weapons over Normandy? I LOVED the Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe game. I have been looking for a good dogfighting game for a while... only thing is that Weapons over Normandy has no multiplayer on it :(*

I tried it but found that is didn't have much support for the keyboard. It was only a demo version mind you but never the less I found it impossible to operate the aircraft. I also found that BF42 has better flight characteristics than Secret Weapons, which is strange because SWON is only a flight sim with no ground battles.

Again I only played the demo though.

Cat: I use keyboard and mouse too and you've seen me fly. LOL

I think it is more about knowing how much power to give the helo and when. It's all about caressing it. ;)

I fly with the joystick, however I have the throttle on my Joystick set to neutral, just a smidge under a hover and I use the W and S keys for direct throttle contol.

Microsoft Sidewinder 3-D Pro.

I use a Wingman Extreme, but I am starting to get a little curious about using the keyboard.

Thanks for the complament!!! I have to say it took a long time and alot of practice. I also use the C key to change views when I am hovering or to look behind me. :)

diddo. i started with the keyboard (even in dc/bf). it was good, and you can get pretty good control as long as you know how fast to tap, etc. the transition from only keyboard to joystick is REALLY tough. i mean it. i fly planes in real life, and i had trouble flying the planes when i switched to joystick, let alone the helos. it's just a matter of reflex and what you're used to. you're not used to pulling back when you have a problem, you're used to jamming whatever key you have set as "pull back". it's definitely a wierd transition. i stuck at it though, because of the throttle. the throttle is, by far, the most important thing about a joystick. no pumping your "throttle up" key trying to hover, just set it, with minor minor changes and it's much easier and more accurate hovering. i think that's the best thing about the joystick. it's not "on" or "off", it has transitions. you don't have to be "full right" or full left", you can make small changes, and that's what i like. sure, you can get really really good with keyboard, but you can almost never reach the degree of precision you might with the joystick, because of the limitations of the hardware. if you're really amazing with the keyboard, it doesn't mean the keyboard is better, it just means you're a good pilot. if you were to transition and get used to the joystick, you would be 100 times better.

So that's your secret.:D I've been trying to learn to fly in BF myself. I recently got a Saitek Evo joystick. I was never a great pilot but the transition was hard nonetheless. The choppers are tricky. Every move requires a counter-move. Smooth fluid actions are key as well as not over compensating. It's a whole other beast compared to a plane. I've been watching you and Needle and practicing when I can in SP. I noticed how Needle was adjusting the throttle when I was flying with him last night. That has helped allot.:D Hey, which view do you guys mostly fly in? I switch between rear and first person. Nice to see you here Klaus. :thumb:

Man I posted this back in December, I love the keyboard now. It just takes some getting use too. I don't think I could fly with a joy stick now if I tired.

Love the keyboard!:D

P.S. Wow it only took 4 years but I finally hit 500 posts!

nose cam only. i can't control it with third person and the cockpit view has all that bulky "interface". you know. the cockpit. the only tough thing is when you're circling a flag that is close to a cliff or mountain or something. you have to know how far your tail sticks out so that you don't get a tail strike, which are really annoying.

EDIT:
by the way, who here actually LIKES the Hind? they turned it in to a weak piece of crap. seriously, sure, it's faster than the apache, but the apache has way better acceleration. why does it matter? well, bad acceleration makes you less maneurverable and agile. you can't correct for things (come into a flag cap area at high speeds, see how much harder it is to circle around to it) as easily. also, what the hell is wrong with the ammunition?!?!?!?!?!?!? only 8 anti tank missles, in comparison to the apache's 16. same anti personel rockets, and they're in one clip, which is nice. and then the gunner? exploding shells versus an anti-personel mini gun? psh, you have freaking rockets. i just think it's the worst helo... oh, ever.
