View Full Version : USB green question mark
After trying (without success) to install an usb HP scanner, in a computer running Win-ME. I had a look at the device manager and found a green question mark on the USB concentrator. Nothing I've done so far seems to work. I've removed the device and instructed windows to reinstall it, to actualice it, to.... Nothing!.
Does anybody knows how to solve this issue sort of reinstalling windows?
Thanks

My first attempt would be the latest chipset drivers for that motherboard.
Hola, YeOldeStonecat:
I did what you suggest. Downloaded 82801AA chipset drivers, and told windows to actualice them. But to no avail, still the green question mark.
Gracias
Boot to safe mode, open device mangler and remove all USB devices. Reboot and start fresh loading your USB stuff again.
Also, make sure USB support is enabled in the BIOS.
Ok. norm:
I'll try what you suggest.
Thanks
Anybody remember that thread a few weeks back that had a proggie list that would look up unknown devices in the manager?

Ahhhh, here we go.... Give this (http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=127994&highlight=unknown+device) a try.
As for starting in safe mode... Well, Win-ME won again. I removed all the USB devices and loaded them again. And, again appeared the blasted green question mark.
I really don't know how to resolve this issue. I think that I'll ditch Win-ME and install Win-XP pro.

Hmmm...yeah, you should enjoy XP much more...long as your system has enough horsepower to run it. Not that ME was a light OS either...quite the slug itself.
Trying to remember...back a few years, earlier on some USB scanners...if the installation got hosed somehow...would leave files behind that would kick off the USB ports. Often fully uninstalling any/all scanner software, then the devices themselves, then reinstalling chipset drivers...would cure it. I remember HP had a special removal tool for their USB drivers...but that was back a few years, in the infancy of USB. Haven't seen that issue lately. Just for yucks...have you fully uninstalled all of the scanner software too?
Next monday I'll give a last try to this usb matter. And yes, I do remember some uninstaller program from HP. I'll try this one too. But, in the end I think that I'll switch to XP.
Thanks for your help
