i just got it 2 days ago and my dl speed is 35 KB/s which is a lame speed compare to my msn dsl connection(80KB/s) which i change. Now it says i have to leave it on for 10 days i was wondering if any of you have yahoo dsl and if this 10 day thing is true or just a whole bunch of crap thanks for hearing me out.

Never heard of such a thing. It does sound as if you need to optimize your connection though. Please read the help & tips link in my signature and answer the questions at the top.

It is true about leaving it on that means they are trying to set the capp.

Looks like your speed problem is more to do with your computer settings than the actual dsl connection. I can't imagine us allowing a speed that low...if you had over twice that with the msn dsl, than it has to be within your computer. The msn dsl and the SBC Yahoo dsl are both going out on the same phone lines...they should be consistent. Call SBC tech support and ask for an ASI technician. If anyone tries to give you the runaround, escalate the matter to a manager. You may be asked some silly questions to start, but please realize that they are routine for a reason. About 50% of the calls that come in are solved in those questions.

hi, i have sbc yahoo dsl too, got it about a month ago.

ive tested my speed a few times tonight and am getting different readings. the first reading was 316kbps down, 191 kbps up

the second was 223 up

the third said: Loaded 225455 Bytes in 12.3366929293 seconds
146.2Kbps is your thruput

so im not really sure whats up.

i ran the analyzer thingie and this is what it said:

TCP options string = 0204058601010402
MTU = 1454
MTU is not fully optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput.
MSS = 1414
MSS is not fully optimized for broadband (although it might work well for slower connections). Consider increasing your MTU value.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 4288
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 4288

For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
520352 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 8)
260176 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 4)
130088 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 2)
65044 (MSS x 46)
bandwidth * delay product:

Your RcvWindow limits you to: 171.52 kbps (21.44 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 68.608 kbps (8.576 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
Consider increasing your RWIN value to optimize TCP/IP for broadband.
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 118 hops

TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000

so where do i go from here? any help would be appreciated :)

thanks in advance

We first need to fix your MTU, what OS are you using?

windows 98 :)

OK then your MTU should be 1492, read HERE (http://dslnuts.com/pppoe.shtml) on how to fix it. Once we get it straight we can optimize the rest of your settings.

i clicked that link and went there, and i read it, but im afraid i still dont get how to change the mtu :( is there any way you could explain it to me in language an 8 yr old could understand? :p sorry..

also-changing these settings isnt going to mess up my computer in any way is it?

now im getting regular readings for download speed in the 233-250 range. considering im supposed to have 384 kbps download, im really not happy. im going to call my ISP in a bit about that.

in the meantime, if you could explain how to change the mtu, id really appreciate it :)

Well that's why I provided the think, to show you how to correct it. If you can't understand it then I can't help you.

okaaaay..well lets see. i saw a link called "MTU stuck below 1486 or less: - Click Here -", so i thought that was it, but i clicked it, and all it is is

"MTU stuck at 1480 for Windows XP? Or 1486 for Windows 2000
Unfortunately, Windows XP's default MTU setting is 1480 with it's built in PPPoE software. There is no way to get around this... with that PPPoE client. Only way is by downloading RASPPPoE. Before you install it, your current connection MUST be deleted, otherwise you will get errors. To delete your current connection, right click My Network Places and select Properties. Your connection should be under Broadband Connections. Right click >disconnect, then right click > delete. Then install RASPPPoE by reading the Windows 2000/XP instructions that came with RASPPPoE. Be sure to read everything carefully, because some instructions are specifically for Windows XP.
If you want an always on connection for RASPPPoE then scroll down in the instructions, it will teach you how.

In some cases as the above for windows 2000 it will be set at 1486 this can happen with the connection from the ISP this is well known on Pacbell and in some cases with Earthlink we’re not sure with the rest of the ISP’s if you find this to be true with your ISP let us know either in the forum or send us a email"

nothing about changing it in windows 98.

i read the rest of the page, and while there's info about the mtu, i see no where that says "to change the mtu, go here, do this, do that, do this". so thats why im kind of lost.

Did you read HERE (http://dslnuts.com/pppoe/Enternet.htm) or HERE (http://dslnuts.com/pppoe/winpoet.htm)?

Can the SG optimizer do it? Maybe that would be easier?

Oh and since the link thing is getting confusing, you could just copy and paste what you want her to read.

No the TCPOptimizer can't do it. I can't provide any better information, nobody else has problems following the link I provided, I don't know what else to tell you.

I don't know what she uses, Enternet or Winpoet but those links show how to set it up for 98, ME or 2K.

From one of the links:

In Windows 9x Operating Systems:

Load regedit. Start > Run > Regedit

Locate the [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Netrans\00x] folder

Under this folder are numbered folders (Example: 0001,0002,0003). Some systems have more, and some have less.

In these numbered folders is a reg key named "MaxFrameSize"

Right click on the key > Modify > Change the value to 1492.

Do this for all of the folders found under Netrans that include this value.

So you see it does say 98, you just have to read it all. I can't walk everyone through every step, you have to help me help you, when I provide a link I assume that the person will thoroughly read it.

Hi

I have the same problem with my Yahoo/SBC service too! My average speed is 40 kbits/sec. Below is my ip information, any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S I tried the following patches
(sguide_tweak_2k.zip
sguide_tweak_2k_pppoe.zip
sg_webtweak_2k.zip)
and used TCP/IP optimizer
and tried the following
"“start” click “Run” enter “gpedit.msc”
Local Computer Policy---Computer Configuration—Administrative Templates
---Network---QoS Packet Scheduler---Limit reservable bandwidth---setting
Make sure check box on “Enabled” is selected
Bandwidth limit 0(%)
“Apply” “OK” then restart computer "
but I still have the same speed.
My OS is Win XP

Speeds will be null without using the MTU 1454, Sbc sells there DSL to people who are on the last stretch from the main switch. They pulled the same thing when i had a synapse error and tryed DSL. If there are alternate ways for broadband in your area, get them. If you are anywhere over 15000' from the switch you can break your year contract or whatever they sucked you into with no repercussions :)

Just about all my DSL installs are SNET/SBC/Yahoo.

Leave your modem on...they do optimize the lines for the first week.

I don't like their "Connection Manager" software, it's a very bloated package. Just about all my clients are business networks, so I have a router in place anyways. 1492 should be MTU.

ok i understand about changing the mtu (thanks YARDofSTUF), i havent changed it yet cuz my puters been acting wonky the last coupledays, i just had my friend come fix it last night.

im going to change the mtu later today. if i do that, and then change whatever else you guys tell me to change, how much faster do you think i can get it to go? like i said right now its at about 220 kbps for downstream, 190 kbps upstream.

just curious :)

i called SBC asking how come my speed wasnt 384kbps (which they advertised for my plan, which is the cheapest, most basic plan-its 384kbps down, 128kbps up) and the guy told me that 384kbps is the MAX. they only guarantee a downstream of 190kbps :/

they had another plan, called the Standard plan or something, which is the exact same price as the basic plan im on, except it offers 1.5Mbps downstream. i asked him what i had to do to get that one, and he said i have to be a certain distance or closer, to the main switching station or something. he offered to go ahead and test my line, so i said ok, and he said my downstream capability maxed out at about 700kbps. so im going to call SBC a little later this morning and ask them to put me on the standard plan instead of the basic, since its the same price -$26.95.

im assuming theyre going to try to give me the runaround, right? tell me that i dont qualify for that plan, becasue im not close enough to the switch.. any ideas what i should say? something like "your tech guy tested my line for me two days ago and told me my downstream capability went up to 700kbps and that i do qualify for the standard plan" ?

i want to say the right thing, so they give it to me. i just keep thinking theyre going to try to **** me around and say i cant have it :(

YARDofSTUF
11-25-03, 06:45 PM
ya deffinately try for the other plan if its the same cost, hell 700kbps is alot better!

11-25-03, 07:10 PM
hmmm...well i just got off the phone with them, and they said they'd switch me over. i dont want to get my hopes up, in case they dont or theres a problem, but if all goes well, ill have the upgraded package by Dec 4th :)

im going to wait til that happens (or doesnt) before i do any tweaking. im afraid im going to change soemthing and mess something up, and then i cant connect at all:rolleyes:

thanks for the help tho, and ill be around :)

hmm..well i downloaded the cable nut tweaker thing. id been getting speeds of 190 kbps all night, but after i ran the tweak and rebooted i got 351kbps. my max is 384 so i think thats pretty good.

the reason i decided to try it is i just found out im getting my laptop back from the shop tomorrw-they werent even sure they could fix it, it was some problem with the motherboard. so yeah its fixed-for $375 bucks. i bought it in febuary tho, its a sony vaio, and i got it at a discount, so it was worth it to get it fixed.

i get it back tomorrow. :) i missed it, man. this desktop im on right now is really oolllld.
