View Full Version : Device Manager ( more questions... !)

I have more questions , this time regarding Device Manager. When I go into it , under Hard Disk Controllers , there is that yellow explanation mark beside Primary IDE Controller (dual fifo). I am not sure what is wrong, and am hoping to get some help. When I go to remove it, it tells me I can't remove it alone; I have to remove it's parent device, which is Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller. When I highlight Primary IDE Controller and click on "properties" , it says " This device is either not present , not working properly , or does not have all the devices installed ( Code 10 ) " . Then it says " Try upgrading the device drives for this device ". I try that but it tells me they are up-to-date. Under Device Usage , there are 2 boxes you can check off - the first one says " disable in this hardware profile" and it is not checked off. The second one says " exists in all hardware profiles " and it is checked off. Is that how it should be? When I click on " performance " , it says under select an item :Compatibility-mode paging reduces overall system performance, and then it says Drive C is using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system.

I'm not sure what any of this means , but I thought I would include this information if it will help. Thanks!

Do you have Win XP? If you do, you should be able to try these two things:

Under the driver info for the bus, click "Roll-back driver", or atleast thats what i think it says - I'm not sure, kinda rusty on Xp.

If you don't have a roll-back and you do have Win XP, click "Un-Install". It'll say something about re-starting to see the effect or something, and when you restart Win Xp should automatically recognize it and install the drivers for it.

Now, with Win 98 or an os such as that, it might be a little harder. Win XP has like a gazillion drivers built in, which makes it easy, and win 98 doesn't. If you do have windows 98, go ahead and look for the newest drivers you can find for that bus and install them.

I must say, i'm not quite as sure how it'd go with 98 as i am with XP.

Thanks for the reply. I have Windows 98 SE . I tried updating the Bus, but it says it's already up to date.

Do you have a IDE controller card installed for your drives? If so, that maybe the reason. It's running off of the card rather then the bus itself.

Hmmm..... I really don't know. How do I tell?

One way would be to open up the computer and see if your drives are connected to a PCI Bus card. Thats atleast the most fun...

Smart boy - It is obviously the reason:

Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller

PCI Bus master.

The reason your primary is having that problem is because it not being used. Well, I'm not actually sure what the problem is but you're not using it.

Just don't worry about it, there isn't really a way you can fix it unless you hook a drive upto it.

or does not have all the devices installed Thats because nothing is hooked up to it.

I have a Promise controller card and it's listed under SCSI devices in device manager. Might check there.

I've seen the issue many times. Often almost as many reasons causing it...including some older viruses.

Some things that have helped cure the issue...

Booting into safe mode and removing redundant items related to IDE controllers and hard drives

Downloading and installing the latest chipset drivers from Intel...

http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=816

Even when running on a PCI IDE and/or RAID card...back when I used 98 on my Promise card..never showed that problem..I don't believe you should see that issue if things are healty.

Yep - whenever I clean install my asus/dually board, I have to add the chipset drivers to make that go away.
