Rebooted this evening and got the good old "Invalid boot.ini" file error so did the usual thing of bootcfg /rebuild which also went well except the bit where it should say fastdetect I put NTDETECT so like a tit, I did bootcfg/rebuild again and now I have the option of which identical copy of XP i wish to boot from, so naturally I`d like to get rid of one of them, so can someone point me in the right direction please??

Thanx:p

Edit boot.ini and remove the reference to the OS you no longer want.

Right click on my computer and select advanced, then startup and recovery. Set the one you want and remove the checkmark for display list. I think you can actually edit from there in XP, i'm on 2k.

Did which ? edit the file or change the selection? Did you set your timeout to "0" ?
This my boot.ini, 2k installed to first partition on first drive.
[boot loader]
timeout=0
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Recovery Console" /cmdcons

My XP - only one OS - is on C:\ - Disk 0 - partion 1
by boot.ini looks like this:

[boot loader]
timeout=7
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Change the timeout=7 to timeout=0 and the menu won't display. It will immediately load the default selection. Ignore the last line of my boot.ini. I have the recovery console installed to my hard drive and I can run it by using f8 to bring up the menu.
