450mhz K6-2
384MB Of PC133 SDRam
12.0gb 5400rpm hard drive
This is a customer's box and he has had me install XP on it before, but somehow he deleted his partioning, and I reloaded it with 2kpro. I know XP will run on the machine, but if I load XP pro, will it be faster then 2kpro SP4 which he already has installed?
Compatibility tests show that all his hardware/software is compat, but the bios won't allow him to go into hibernation/stand by because the bios date is 1999.

It won't be faster than 2K with those specs but it will run. I would stick with 2K.

As much as I like XP, I'd stick with 2k on that rig as well. XP would work, but it has a bit more overhead than 2k which equals less overall performance despite the nifty features of XP.

Well I went ahead and upgraded to XP pro. Doesn't seem any slower or faster then 2kpro surprisengly. I just have to work on that problem with the Stand By, Hibernate, then everything will be straight.

illestdynasty don't use hibernation or standby they don't work in any Windows OS, they only cause problems. Just set your monitor to power down after a set time.

Please explain. When I had 2kpro on the same rig the standby feature worked. It works on all of my other XP boxes except for this one. XP indicates that its because the bios on this box is before the year 2000.

Depends - there have been problems - especially with laptops for me.
EDIT: shutting down your disks is not a good idea

In my experience (and I work on A LOT of pcs) those features cause more problems than they are worth. I would say with 1 out of 10 pcs those features work fine.

I'd turn off all the "fluffy features" of XP...meaning the GUI looks.
Right Click "My Computer", select Properties, then the Advanced Tab. The Performance Box...Settings button, select Adjust for Best Performance.
This will make XP look a lot like 2K...get rid of the fancy 3D look to many menus and windows...but saves a lot of system resources...making it run "snappier".

Thanks for the help, I already disabled the fancy graphics, only thing enabled is Clear Type, per his request. Upgraded to XP SP1. Installed Perfect Disk, defraged static pagefile set at 768. Everything is running smoothly.

i just ctrl alt del and lock the comp and turn my monitor off and i can leave it like that for days with any program i want running still
and im almost sure i can still do a remote desktop this way..
it's been awhile since ive used that tho.
i miss running 2kpro but i feel my games run slightly better on xp pro..
i belive the desktop and other programes did run probaly 5-10% faster in 2k i just had to many problems with blue screen
and xp has run my stable then my chevy for cryin out loud.
tho the 2k i was repairing almost as much as i have to fix on the fords in my drive way
