If anyone can please help me I would be very appreciative.
I have a P4 2.4 with cable internet service that is fed via satellite from my apt complex. I continue to have trouble with my connection dropping. I then have to shut down the computer, disconnect the modem power and reboot.
Also, my connection speed is horrible, about 250-300kb.sec downstream only. I have tried many tweaks here, but am unable to increase my MTU.
Please help.

Moccoffee,
I have windows XP and use no VPN software or other software to connect to the net. I also do not share my connection.
Should I post here or on the forum?
Thanks, Vishal

Also make sure you have all the windows updates
if the optimizer didn't work try the following
Start Registry Editor.
Locate and then click the following key in the registry, where AdapterIDNumber is a hexadecimal number:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\{AdapterIDNumber}\Connection
In the Connection key, check the Name value to determine if it matches the name of the Internet connection that you found in step 2.
If the Name value matches the name of the Internet connection, note the name of the {AdapterIDNumber} key.
If the Name value does not match the name of the Internet connection, repeat this step to check the Name value in the next {AdapterIDNumber}\Connection key in the registry.
Locate and then click the following key in the registry, where AdapterIDNumber is the hexadecimal ID number of the Internet connection that you noted in step 5:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Interfaces\{AdapterIDNumber}
On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value, where MaxMTUSize is the maximum supported MTU size that you discovered earlier in the Ping tests:
Value name: MTU
Data type: REG_DWORD
Radix: Decimal
Value data: MaxMTUSize
Quit Registry Editor.

I see several adapter ID numbers and am unsure which one is correct. Also, this may help with my speed a little, but do you also know why my connections are dropping. Do any of my numbers look out of whack. Is a Downstream Power of 17.00
acceptable?

Mccoffee,
I tried to do that. When I click network connections I see 1394 connection and local area network. I cannot delete LAN. Also when I also R click and go to properties I see TCP/IP protocol but see no way to remove it on XP.
Any ideas. I really want to get this fixed. I have only used my conputer for a half hour and have hed to reboot twice to get my connection working.
Thanks,
Vish

Ok did you see those check boxes see if you could un check those if not remove the network card right click my computer, device manager and remove network card also disable that firewire 1394 while your in there. Reboot Also get ridd of that 1394 conenction that's firewire make sure it's disabled. I think i have found your fix do you own a sound blaster audigy.
If yes goto my computer control panel, add/remove programs the auidgy comes with 1394 firewall networking software i forgot the name of it see if you see anything with 1394 and remove it. .

Mccoffee,
I uninstalled the ethernet card and disabled the firewire. I rebooted the system and it automatically reinstalled the ethernet and the internet connection was active. I tried using sgoptimizer, but MTU still stuck. I also went into downloads section, and downloading everything that would speed up the connection and increase the MTU without success.

Mccoffee,
I tried the test and it was all green. Interestingly, I checked the drivers for my LAN card and there were updated drivers on the Realtek website. Since yest my connection has not dropped. That is a big improvement. My connection continues to be very slow though, but that may be because of my poor quality ISP.
I got a call from bellsouth today stating that in December they will be begginning dsl access in my area!! Does that mean other providers will too or just bellsouth?? What would be the best approach on who to choose.
Thanks for all of your help,

it's just bellsouth I would switch i'll tell you why if you are sharring cable with in the building. Sounds like you live in a populated area dsl isn't shared like cable. Just make sure you have good clean wirring in the building b4 switching.
