Hey guys, Microsoft is having me make some registry changes so that I can install some of their patches. Can anyone tell me what I am doing and will it affect past and future security patches?
Here are their directions:
Step 1:
1. Click Start and click Run. Type cmd and click OK.
2. In the command line, type the following commands and press Enter after each command:
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcps.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll
3. Start the Administrative Tools utility in Control Panel.
4. Double-click Services.
5. Right-click Cryptographic Services, and then click Start.
6. Go to Locate in the C:\Windows\System32\ folder and find Catroot2 folder.
7. Rename it to OldCatroot2 by right clicking it and selecting Rename.
8. Restart the computer and go to the following direct links install the security patches:
Thanks muchly!!!!

Microsoft sent them to me because I was having problems with some of the security patches. I would download them and the next day my puter would tell me I needed to get them again. The patches never showed up in my add/remove programs list. I must have downloaded them ten different times.

I doubt MS would tell you anything that will harm in the long run. I would do what they say and hope it works. JMO:)
I think Croc wanted to make sure that the info really did come from Microsoft. If that is the case, yes, follow the directions. It looks like they suspect a damaged or corrupted folder so they're having your reregister some .dll's and create a new folder for the patches.

Ok guys, Thanks once again.
Guess I have to get brave and just mess with my registry.....never done that one before. Makes sense though, making a new folder for a corrupt one.
Boy, you guys are the greatest and have really helped me on numerous occasions

When I read the header, I thought this was related to this (http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=126158)

Actually it was from Compass Rule Manager @msn.com. Guess MSN has new employee titles!!
What OS Cindy?
Is System Restore an option because the problem started recently?
What they suggest doesn't involve any d/load so I would suggest try it.

Being suspicious but not paranoid :D
I agree with Croc...what OS?
Was there a problem with installing the patches before?
(If it ain't broke, why fix it)..I know bad grammer..lol
IMHO I would rather wipe, reformat and re-install, even if I am comfortable with registry fixes.
Just my .000002 cents
I've had something similiar happen and they had me do something similiar to what she's doing. I think it's legit. I just wanted to make sure she wasn't getting nailed with a virus or something of that nature. She should be alright with those instructions.

I have WindowsXP, home edition.
The patches are 824146, 24105, 811493, 815021. It took me quite some time before I noticed I was downloading the same old patches all the time. I remember thinking, gosh MS really has some problems with XP that it requires so many patches. After about a month of downloading all the time, I decided to check and see what patches I had on my computer and what patch numbers I was downloading. I couldn't find those patches on my add/remove programs. So all that time, I was downingloading the same ole ones, they just didn't get on my puter. They appeared to download, I had to restart my computer but they never show up.
Just checked the XP laptop here and found all but 1 installed and recorded in Add/Remove.
There is one that I haven't installed but there has never been the need for it.
Have the MS update site check for installed updates and see what that shows.
