I am trying to incorporate another router box into my system using the switch resources that come with it without using the router itself.

Because no one has ever heard of an address for one of these other than 192.168.1.1 (which is already in use on the network with the BEFSR41 Linksys Router) I have changed the device address to 192.168.1.3

But when attempting to enter the 192.168.1.3 address with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, I get an error message saying that either the address or the subnet mask are wrong.

I'm also at a loss when asked for the DNS. Since the router which is enabled has that information, should I just point those DNS entries to the router address? (192.168.1.1 is also the gateway.)

And what should be my primary WINS?

Sorry, if these are dumb questions...I'll take a link to a good networking address explanation on the web as punishment! :-)

NOTE: This is actually an appliance server. A glorified router/switch with a hard disk and Linux built-in. If you're interested, here's a link to the manual:

You're on the right track it seems.

On that second device, the one you are trying to make 192.168.1.3....that should be fine. Make sure you're setting it's LAN IP to that, not the WAN IP. 255.255.255.0 subnet is fine. Disregard it for DNS, you want DNS going to either your primary router, or directly to your ISP's 2x DNS servers.

WINS leave disabled...not even DHCP for WINS...but disabled. Thats something that runs on an NT server on larger corporate networks, which I doubt you have.

Make sure you disable DHCP on that appliance, as the Linksys is running DHCP by default, and two DHCP services on the same network do not get along.

YeOldeStonecat,

Thanks as always for a couple of words of encouragement and a push in the right direction.

I've got it working, albeit with much lowered expectations!

I never did figure out why it wouldn't accept the network numbers I was feeding it. It actually may have had something to do with having a capital letter in my WindowsXP Pro login!!! Go figure...

You sure do a lot of nice things for the peope visiting this forum, YOSC!
