Greetings,
In my never ending quest to experiment and create more work for myself, I am thinking of adding a computer on my network that would be solely used to host ftp server, http server etc.
I have various cameras, http servers (including a couple of the cameras) and an ftp server already configured and working when I want them to...but don't really want to open up any of my personal data in any way.
Therefore, I'm thinking of just adding one of my old computers to the network without a monitor to host these kinds of things 24/7.
I use a dynamic dns address service and update client to keep it current. It seems to change so often that unless my main computer is up and running that client, I can't access any of it.
Alternatively, I've peeked at a device that Toshiba has discontinued called Toshiba Magnia SG20 Wireless Server that's now selling for about $200.
Details on this device can be found at ...
Tiger Direct (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?sku=t24-1556%20p)
...including the manual etc. in PDF.
Basically, it's an "appliance server" running Linux with a Celeron chip and capable of serving up music, photos, files etc. While it's a router and 6 port switch capable of wireless...I don't really intend to use it for that just yet.
I already have both a wired and wireless network on a Linky BEFSR41 (serves as Gateway/Router) and a Linky Wireless Router set to function only as a Gateway.
Now, to the real questions:
1) Anyone ever heard of this Toshiba Appliance Server?
2) If I simply assign this box (or another computer) the task and forward the needed ports through the BEFSR41 will it leave the rest of the network vulnerable? (Have Norton Firewall on all other computers on the network...NAT enabled, of course so there's that firewall, too (of sorts.)
3) What if I just hung the box in question out in the DMZ 24/7 with its own firewall for unused ports etc.?
Take your time. It's Friday night. I've got a broken ankle and I'm not going ANYWHERE! (ahhhh...what a great idea it was to blow off those few leaves in the sloped front yard with the new, heavy duty backpack blower!)
Cheers,
