The core of the OS is still the same. The main differences are related to the market that is most inclined to use certain features.

XP Home cannot join a domain network.

XP PRO has group policy, XP Home does not.

Those are the two biggest differences that I can think of. There are others as well though. If your not on a corporate type network, then joining a domain network or applying group policy will most likely not be necessary.

Theres the NT core and then there is the 98core.

NT core = true 32 bit kernel

NT OS's include: NT, 2000, XP

non-NT cores (98 core) = 98, 98SE, ME

Mac's latest OS is the first 64-bit OS to hit the mainstream users. There is a 64-bit version of windows but you most likely won't see it in the mainstream for AT LEAST another year or so, but I could be wrong.

128 bit kernel.. I think thats a bit too far ahead of the mainstream curve at this point.

If you want a solid OS and you are comfortable with the windows environment, then stick with an NT-based core like XP or win2k.

Also Pro has encryption and home doesn't.
