I had enough parts to scrap up a legacy box with Windows 98 lately but I already ran into some problems. I have not used the machine since 1999, back when I had dial-up but everything worked fine. Now I built the system and placed in a Linksys 10\100 v5.1 ethernet card and I ran into some problems. Whenever I am downloading something the download will just stop and never resume or it will say connection to server reset. Same thing happens with websites and in-game downloads. This is a real pain especially with Windows updates. I downloaded all the Win98 tweaks\patches at this website and the same problem happens.

Here is my system:

Windows 98 non-SE(all windows updates)
Pentium 2 450mhz
128MB SDRAM 100mhz
ASUS p2B motherboard(latest BIOS and chipset drivers)
GeForce 2 GTS 32MB(44.03 drivers)
Sound Blaster Audigy 1(latest drivers)
Linksys v5.1 10/100(latest drivers)
Linksys BEFW11S4 router, set as a gateway(latest firmware)

I also tried a Linksys v4.2 card and a Linksys Wi-Fi card. The Wi-Fi card did not work with the sound card installed, but with no sound card the downloads still stopped. I got a copy of Windows XP home edition and briefly tried it and the downloads stopped and there was too much of a performance decrease to warrant using it. Transfers between my Windows XP Pro machine and this machine do not stop.

I would be VERY grateful if someone could help me with this.

If you have a different brand ethernet card there . Try it. I ran into the same problem with a old computer I have running win 98. When I switch out the Linsky card to a 3 com . My problem was solved. Never had much luck with linsky cards. This may not be your problem. But it won't hurt to try. Good Luck!

Although I like their routers and switches for smaller networks, I've never liked their NIC's. Very flakey, and you have to be careful with drivers....they are specific to versions of each network card. (note your 5.1).

May want to look at IRQ's on your sys board, is the NIC in PCI slot #2? (should be), leave top and bottom PCI slots empty.

How's Device Mangler look? Any conflicts?

Good motherboard BTW...I still have one of those running at the office.

I'm wondering if the RAM might not be flakey.

Since you've tried 3x NICs...I'd have to assume a bum NIC isn't the problem. You've done all your windows updates. Do you have an antivirus program installed, and updated?

The NIC is in slot 2 and my soundcard is in slot 3. slots 1 and 4 are open. No conflicts in the Device Manager.
