Has anyone gotten that silly email about a September Patch from Microsoft ? the one with the little exe attached to it ?
Geez I have been to 3 pc's , where they called me for it... just glad they listened to me, and left it alone. it says , and looks just like a Windows update page.... but Microsoft doesnt email out patches. especially in exe form.
I trashed them. Stay safe...

Yes, many of them, there's been a couple of threads here about them.
Sven is one of the worms getting widespread in this manner. Old trick, as this idea is not brand new....just making a resurfacing recently. When Windows Update first came out...a virus that I forget the name of began that trend. With all the media hype over the DCOM and Blaster worm recently...someone probably figured a fake patch "from" Microsoft would go over pretty well...which it apparently is.
Oh yeah, it's a big item right now. The bad thing is, people still don't listen about MS not emailing any patches and they go and have to click on the darn thing. I swear, I'm going to lose my mind if people don't get a grip soon.

Yes , but it keeps us low rent tweakers & restorer's busy. got 3 on my list today , for the same thing... but it pays for the puppy chow.... I (sigh) also wish more understood. But my circle are finding , that ( thanks to SG and it's circle of assistance) this is a no-no , so I guess some are listening, and as bad word spreads , I hope that good will as well.
The Tab at the 453rd's Drunken Duck Tavern is on me....
Thanks SG ! Cheers !

I got the windows update email the other day and deleted it, also today I got an email inviting me to give my details at www.survey.com.... and could win prizes, sounds like one of those phishing sites to get your details, I deleted that aswell.
It was from freeserve@survey.com..., may be genuine but better to be safe than have my ID stolen.. We get CNN news and they warned about false Ebay sites doing this.
I wonder what the windows update email would have done? And how do they get your email address?

Worms utilizing the Windows Update tactic will usually have a file enclosed, which they'll tell you to run. The Sven worm traveled with a file called "update123.exe"...where "123" would be any random numbers. You double click that, and it infects your system, and goes about spreading itself from there.
Worms usually get your e-mail address from the address books of peoples system that they infect...so you most likely got it because your e-mail addy was on someone elses address books.

Not in Mine.... I do subscribe to the MS security newsletter, but it always comes in as plain text..... never an attachment on it. and it gives links to MS for issues. But so far by the time I got the email from them I was a week or more ahead of their warnings ... again I Salute and do a few Victory Rolls in my Spitfire MkIXc for this Wonderful site , and all it's great contributors ! thanks alot SG !
