I'm now officially using AVG free edition. Now I get to evaluate what some of you say is a great free program. I hope it floats, at least until I can afford to get Norton System Works 2003 or 2004.

Welcome aboard blebs99. :D ;)
Nice to see you and AVG are keeping company.

At the moment I am having problems with the OE5 plugin. I tend to keep emails and when there are 200 in the list I go through and clean the inbox out.
The plugin has become unstable recently and freezes OE when I go to another OE box like Hotmail or Sent Items. This is what's causing it and you will notice a slowing of OE after you check the box to use the plugin.

I will fix it but at the moment it is unchecked.

Apart from that, all's well.

Have fun using it Ross. Cooee if you get into trouble.

Take care out there.

Croc.

blebs don't waste your money on Norton Systemworks buy Systemsuite 5.0 (http://www.v-com.com/product/ss_ind.html) instead, it is FAR superior to Systemworks.

I would still use Norton AV though, that is my favorite AV app.

;)

I was using System Works 3.0 from 2000 which included NAV2000. I like everything but it's time for an upgrade to a whole new engine. I really feel naked without NAV. We shall see how this goes.

Hey blebs
Welcome to the land of AVG and low resources.
I am trying AVAST on another PC (larger footprint than AVG)...but AVG remains on my laptop. I renewed my subscription to NAV 2003 on my main PC and on my server I have EZTrust promotional (read free) AV for 2003 server.
If you use flie sharing programs (kazza), then AVG sometimes appear to have problems, other than that it has served me well.
Good Luck :D

Well I found out it doesn't like to scan the Zone Alarm folder. Blue Screens on that one, so I just took it out of the scan loop. So far, so good. No trouble with the OE plugin as of yet.

My Norton Antivirus Subscription Has Expired

Your subscription to use Live Update has expired. You can still manually upadte your virus definitions by downloading them from symantec's site or other sites that link to the downloads. Once downloaded, run the executable and the definitions get installed.

Thanks Tony, I tried it but got the warning that my definiton subscription had terminated therefor it would not update with the new definitions. That's alright, when I get some money to work with (???????) I'll get a new engine and I'll feel clothed once again. :D

All the NAV systems I've worked on...once you've expired...even manually downloading and attempting to update the software that method will not work.

I am still using NAV 2003..renewed my subscription. So I am not going to dispel NAV in any way...it works for me.
However, I was just reading some posts over here (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,7795290~root=security,1~mode=flat) about NAV 2004 slowing down the PC's that had NAV2004 installed.
I can't verify this, as I do not have NAV 2004...so don't go flaming....some Symantec reps are asking for people to test this problem.
Go figure

I'm going to get a copy of 2003 and stay away from 4 as long as possible. Hopefully I can still find some 2003's out there.

I'm not the ultimate cheapskate...but close.

Check out:

...for an $11 copy of Norton Anti-Virus with 1 year of updates. It works.

The downside? This CD contains an outdated version of LiveUpdate that has to be upgraded by going to the Norton site and getting it. It will drive you a bit crazy trying to get it to install.

But, again, it works.

Nortons has a slight fault in its software. If you unistall it then reinstall, you start over - 1 full year of free updates. I have 3 computers and over the years I have had to reformat them or bought bigger HD's. Each time I reinstall Norton stuff, my subscription is fully restored.

I'm not saying you have to reformat, once I had some conflicts on my computer that I thought was from Norton Software, so I unistalled just Norton System Works and reinstalled - to my subsprise, my subscription was restored for 1 year.

tr87526 thanks, I'm aware of that. I've been running 2000 for too long. It's time for me to upgrade the engine. I've only paid one time in 3 years. To me, the protection that it's given me is worth the price. I don't have a problem with paying for that, but I do have a problem with 2004's activation requirements. I may never uninstall and reinstall 5 times, but I surely don't like to ever have to try and call them. I made that mistake one time and I won't do that anymore.

I kinda agree don't waste your money on the new verisons of norton products. But then I'll just tell you anyway the old products are just as good as the new. I have but I disable it once I got myself a dlink router is norton internet security 2001. That was a great firewall and still is today. Norton anti virus is good 2001,2000. anything above 2002,2003,they suck.
