okay i have 3 comps that are all sharing internet connection by a 5 prot workgroup switch. The internet connection work fine on all comps but i have a problem getting the computers to see each other in workgroup. I would really like to share files, printer, ect. but cuz the computers wont see eachother i can do that. Can anyone tell me how to fix this problem besides reinstalling xp on all computers.

Is the WinXP firewall enabled on any of them? Or any other type of firewall?

Can you do a search for the "missing" compute from any of the other computers, and find it? (Right click My Network Places, select "Search for Computers") Even if the other computers are in different workgroups, you'll still find them this way.

All computers should be in the same workgroup if you wish to see them in the first layer of network places, but you can still always browse to them by drilling deeper even if they're in different workgroups.

1) Can you ping the computer in question's IP address? If no, you most likely have some sort of firewall enabled on that computer. If yes,

2) Can you find the computer by right-clicking on Network Places-->Search for Computers?

not a single firewall is on, i made sure of that. All comps are on the same workgroup. And i cant find any comps when searching on my network place. Anyother things i can check?

OK, now the computers can be seen.

Next step is adding accounts on each computer in user manager, and sharing a folder(s) and/or printer.

Whatever you log onto one computer with...meaning username and password...you need to add that account to the other computer which you are sharing a resource from. Meaning, if on Computer A you log on as "john" with a password of "doe", and you wish to access something from Computer B...you need to add a user "john" with a password of "doe" to Computer B's user manager. Then when you share something, add that account to the share, either through "local users" or just the john doe account.

Several ways of sharing, that's the way I do it...kinda the old fashioned NT 4 way.
