Cant connect cant ping cant cant cant..Help!?

I am trying to help a friend over the phone. He has a Compaq desktop using intel pro nic. He has Charter pipeline broadband.

He lost all connection to internet. He had connection yesterday.. playing counterstrike. Shutdown.

Today he cant connect to internet at all. Have tried ipconfig /release and renew. Have uninstalled nic and reinstalled.

He is not behind a router or firewall.

It is able to renew an ip, but he cannot ping anything and appears to have no connection at all.

Ideas?:( :(

Did he try calling isp if so what did they say.

Yes he did... They tried a few things,, which didn't work,, and said the problem must be "spyware"?? Come on folks... Anyways.. they said it is on his side. I suppose if we cant figure this thing out he will have to have their tech guy come out...

Try shutting down the computer; unplug the cable modem; wait 30 seconds; plug the modem back in; wait til all lights are green; restart the computer. Worth a shot, if You haven't tried this all ready. ;)

Ummm no firewall? it could be any spyware or trojan or anything.

After working through everything I finally decided his nic card gave up the ghost. His computer is still under warranty and his nic was integrated so I had him take it in..
