oh man your computer is gonna blow up!! :rotfl:

not, the most way to get rid of errors is to do a clean install of xp or a reformat but what version of windows are u using im guessing 98?

When you install software, you should not have any other programs running, including anti virus. If you install them anyway and leave programs running (like anti virus etc), there are files in use that cannot be updated along with the install.
Therefore, you get error messages similar to the one you are getting.

Thank you for your replies.

Opmharley> yes im running windows 98 and for me to get xp i would probably need more ram x_x. And a fresh install is not something i want to do. Ive had my share of reformats too much in the past few months.

Norm> That didnt do the trick but thank you.

I didnt need adobe acrobat, just the adobe reader to read pdf files so it wasnt that big of a deal. I also only get this error with DeadAIM and i can live with out. (It was on my computer when i made windows 98 install over 2k. So its still here, but i just cant view history and i have to manually view it (manual is in goto my documents and check the HTML logs D=) x_x)

Installing 98 over 2k was a bad idea. I'm surprized you aren't riddled with problems on that PC.

I didn't think my posted method would work for you either, as you've already messed up the install.

It was originally on 98 t hen upped to 2k then brought back down to 98. My reason? When i was on 2k it was buggy like crazy. My net would work for like 10 minutes then shut off and i would have to reboot my computer. I was starting to think i was a victim of that blaster virus but patching myself was one of the first things i did. (along with firewall and such). I couldnt figure out what was wrong and i couldnt live without net so out of anger i went back to 98. (when i got 2k the first time it was smooth though. I loved it because it was hard to crash and very stable. Too bad the 2nd time around it was buggy =( )

When doing the 98>2k>98 my computer was pretty new. I only install a few programs (the essentials) so it shouldnt have done anything wrong. I do know what may have caused this but i dont want to bother fixing it. When i did install over 2k i got these errors by windows 98 installer saying something like "Could not install these files." I know that it 1. Made my outlook express not work (fixed using windows update) and 2. it took away my windows 98 boot screen (the blue one =O!). I dont think it happend because of 2k because ive had it happend before which is really weird because i would think that a new harddrive, and using the system restore cds i got would make me errorless.

Patching 2k after getting the blaster worm wouldn't have fixed the worm problem (only masked it). You could have used a removal tool from the Symantec site though.
If you had an internet connection as you installed 2k, the worm got in almost immediately after first boot.

Why not try 2k again if you liked it. Format, and do a clean install.
If you don't format, and either clean install 98, or 2k (or dual boot and run both from different partitions), You're bound to have a lot more problems in future. Too many files are the wrong versions as you are now, and too hard to weed them all out.

If you do decide to install 2k again, make sure you have the patch on CD (or another drive) and install it before you ever plug in to the internet.

Yeah i think i left my cable on as i installed win2k. Clean install is something i really dont want >_<. Although dual booting sounds nice.

Do you have a tutorial or something that can tell me how to setup a dual boot? =o

Thank you Norm for all this help

EDIT: Well now i have the patch, but.....the problem with he patch is that it requires a service pack of 2 or greater i think and my 2k is at service pack 0 or 1 x_x. So no matter what i need to get on the net to get t hat x_x.

http://www.duxcw.com/digest/Howto/software/windows/dual/

I would start from scratch, and remove all partitions with fdisk, then make 2 new partitions with fdisk (format both), then install 98 on C:, and then install 2k on D:

Setting up a dual boot with a system that already has problems is not my way of doing things.

edit - You can get the service packs from MS site, and you can get the worm removal tools from symantec site for free.

Oh darn =(

But anyways its just a small problem that i can easilly overlook. Starting fresh again is not something i really want to do. All my recent posts have been ones of trouble and eventual refromats so im not gonna reformat for a while. Unless..i get some problem where i cant use a vital program.

But i can try a dual boot without starting over right?

EDIT After reading that tutorial im gonna just remain as i am now. Most of the dual boot stuff is done in dos and my moniter is crappy and i can barley read DOS.

Thank you again Norm =(

I know you don't want to but like Norm said starting from scratch is what you really need to do.

Setting up a dual boot is not hard at all, again like Norm said, install 98 first on the c partition and then install 2K on the d partition. I don't remember having to do it in DOS.

Good Luck.

Ill consider it ;p.

When im tired of doing something i usually phase out and dont do it for a while. Im going through one of those phases with reformats. I probably will do it....eventually ;p.

Thank you Kei ~

Agreed. Format and install 2K, go right to SP4, run other Windows Updates and latest drivers, and you should be all set. "Upgrading" any OS can lead to problems, as it's not as nice and clean as a fresh install, but rather a "half and half" OS. Add to that mess...you "downgraded" back to 9X.
