May I make a suggestion nicola?

I've noticed you have posted recently a number of problems. Some of which are not that easily fixed over an internet connection to a forum, especially since your knowledge of computers is lacking some of the most basic of skills (no insult intended, we all start somewhere)

You must know someone , a friend, a coworker? that could come over and set your PC up from scratch, and get all your new hardware working etc.

Win ME isn't the best OS MS ever made, but some people swear by it. Me, I personally hate it.
XP would be a better route to take, as it's the latest, and will most likely work best with newer hardware.

If I were you I would try and barter my own skills (whatever they may be) with someone that can help you hands on with your PC. That way, you may be able to learn as you go, and be better prepared for the next problem that inevitably will happen in future.

Good luck nicola, hope you get all these things fixed up and start enjoying your new toys.

Norm.

I FULLY agree with Norm:D. ME was the worst OS ever, XP is definitely the route to go.

That doesn't sound right, The manufacture say's it won't run of 98se? What kind pf camera?

Also I wouldn't stick XP on a system that may not have the necessary hardware to run it properly.

Post your system specs.

CPU, Ram (amount), motherboard make and model if you can.

Or what make and model of computer you have.

Once it's installed you may have to get drivers for video, or other hardware, but hopefully not. XP has a good bank of drivers

We have just bought the JVC GR-D70-AA CamCorder and yes, you do need XP to run it properly. XP is already loaded with most of the software for ours and no doubt, yours as well.

What do the install instructions say about minimum OS requirements?

You NEED everything under Critical Updates and all the vulnerablity-specific updates under the Windows XP section.

I wouldn't install the drivers from there. It's better to download them from the actual hardware makers' websites...drivers from Windows Update sometimes can be glitchy in my experience.

the drivers it as asked me to download are
sis display driver version 6.13.10.2090
sis corp {1.18.04}media driver version 5.10.00.6180

I wouldn't install any new driver if what you're using now works fine.

I would. SiS chipset and video drivers, and probably sound...they're a bit low end and flakey, I'd go with Microsoft's drivers for these. Right now you're probably running in a generic VGA adapter driver.

When you installed XP...did you do a clean, fresh install, deleting whatever was there before...formatting the drive? (better solution)

Or did you perform an upgrade? (less than ideal solution)

i upgraded  is there a step by step way of doing a clean 1 ,if so can any one tell me please ,thanks in advance xxxxx:)

I prefer doing a full, clean install, over an upgrade. Reasons? Well, for lack of better words, doing an "upgrade" can lead to a half breed OS. If your prior OS had issues (which many do)...upgrading the OS can migrate some of those issues.

Now...to do a clean install, boot from the cd-rom, you'll see a choice asking what partition to install the OS...you'll see a choice to delete that partition, then once you delete it, you'll have a choice to create a new partition...once that's done, you'll have a choice to format that partition...then finish installing the OS.

Things to think about before doing so!!!
*Any data on the main partition right now....it will all be deleted.
*Your upgrade from WinME may have migrated hardware drivers that 2K doesn't have built in...so you probably didn't have to go through a driver search. If you choose a clean install, and the OS doesn't have built in drivers for your hardware (which SiS can be an oddball)...you'll have to go on a driver hunt for your hardware afterwards. What may be a good idea, since your current install seems to be working, is jot down all your important hardware (system board chipset, display adapter, sound card, network card, modem).

These are just my thoughts...think before rushing into this, and let some others respond. Formatting a system from scratch can be a daunting experience...depending on your hardware...which I'm cautioning you on since I see you have an SiS based system.

Well Nicola, first off I would recommend making an XP boot disk.

Then start your computer with the boot disk in the drive.
When it gets to the c:\> prompt type fdisk.
Then you delete your primary partition, then recreate it ( this will delete everything on your hard drive).
After this you restart your computer with the windows XP CD in the drive and follow the instructions ;D

PS You will need a previous Windows CD to do a clean install.... just so microsoft can verify that you have already bought a previous version :D
