Hey I was looking in my startup menu I found two new processes that I've never had before... can you help me identify them

1. CTHELPER.exe it says its something about a WINDVDPATCH but i dont have a dvd rom installed nor dvd software

2. %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k it says that it is for the KernelFaultCheck.

Do I need these? what the hell are they for?

First, bookmark this site:

http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.htm

The CTHELPER and WINDVDPATCH are both Creative sound card plugin helpers. You don't need them. Disable them in Start > Run > msconfig > Startup.

(Below has been copied and pasted)

dumprep 0 -k
dumprep 0 -u

Used in connection with memory dumps - you can disable these by - right clicking on My Computer, selecting Properties and then the Advanced tab. Click on the Settings button in 'Startup and Recovery'. In the bottom pane - under 'Write debugging information' - click on the down arrow and then select 'None' - OK your way out

Thanks burke you are always helpful.. I got one more for ya tho. Is it better without any memory dumps? Or should I leave them enabled?

Leave them enabled, but if you have a crash, that "dumprep" will show back up in Startup...just disable it again if that happens.

However, I would disable the Automatically Restart option. See below:

I found this while looking ...

We are not sure but we believe this task to be part of Intel’s LANDesk Management Suite, either licensed directly from Intel, or as part of a Symantec Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition solution. More specifically we believe this task to be part of Intel’s Alert Management System (AMS), itself part of the LANDesk Management Suite.

Here is a TASK LIST (http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm) program for others you may have questions about.

Find out what those progs are doing by downloading and installing this free cool program:

Process Explorer (http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml)

I use it, works great!
